Headstrong heiress Sharisse Hammond wants no part of the New York society marriage that has been arranged for her. So she heads west across a vast and dangerous land -- with no intention of honoring her agreement to become the mail-order bride of a rugged Arizona rancher.

But Lucas Holt needs a wife -- any wife -- if his plan to destroy his most hated enemy is to succeed. And this gullible Eastern lady would do quite nicely. However, their separate schemes to use one another are complicated by raw, aching passion. For Lucas's beautiful, unsuspecting pawn was not supposed to be so irresistible alluring. And freedom-loving Sharisse never dreamed she could ever desire one man so much!

5.0 out of 5 stars Her best ever! 3 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The hero of this novel is one of my favorites in all of romance fiction. I'm usually able to spot or at least suspect when I'm being set up for the kind of surprise that is revealed about the hero at the end of this story, but I never did until I read it. I was only able to go back afterward and see where I SHOULD have noted that Ms. Lindsey had something special up her sleeve. Bravo, Johanna! "Tender Is the Storm" is one of the brightest jewels in your crown.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WINNER!! 14 Mar 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I love everything Ms. Lindsey writes but most of all, I love all her western theme books. Each and every one of them has rich and full characters that make you want to know them. Lucas and Sharisse play off each other wonderfully! Trying to outsmart one another is half the fun. Include this one on your reading list and you won't go wrong. Great original story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hot & Steamy Historical Romance 8 Nov 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
American West - tall, tanned and unbreakable Slade Holt has been living the life of the Apache, forced to flee his home with his twin brother Lucas as a young boy when their father was brutally murdered for the gold mine he'd discovered. But he was wounded in the flight and lost contact with Lucas. Now he comes to settle the score with the man hired to kill his father. The fight doesn't last long - Holt hasn't wasted his time in the wilderness, and his reputation goes before him. Now he can tackle the next part of his plan for revenge, find his twin.
In New York, the pampered heir of Marcus Hammond is about to be wed to a highly respectable son of another high society family. Only problem is, Sharisse has no feeling for Joel whatsoever, and has had a grudge against men ever since her youthful heart was stamped on by a scoundrel. But her baby sister Stephanie is in love with Joel, and she has resolved to leave the state altogether and become a mail-order bride rather than face seeing her man wed to the wrong sister. When Sharisse discovers the truth, they concoct a plan to convince their autocratic father to let Stephanie marry Joel, and Sharisse finds herself on her way to Arizona to meet this Lucas Holt, who has advertised for a bride...

The following story is fast, furious, passionate, romantic and intriguing. Sharisse and Lucas have strong lustful feelings for each other right from the moment he hands her down from the stagecoach, but both have secrets and lies that will mean they cannot be true to each other. But passion like this will not long be denied, particularly when Lucas's harsh twin brother Slade shows up and makes it plain to Sharisse that he wants her, too. Sharisse finds herself longing for Lucas's company, his kisses, and not just for protection from the harsher life under the huge Western skies. Can love find a way to make up for the lies, and give this fiery pair a happy-ever-after?

Like most of Johanna Lindsey's earlier works, this is a great read that keeps you turning pages throughout. And the ending is one that will stay with you long after you've closed the book. Make a large mug of tea, turn off the telephone, get comfortable and enjoy...
