Product Description

Johnny's first two "secular" albums for Mercury (his first release for the label was Sounds of Christmas) both hit the charts in 1964, with Tender Is the Night going all the way up to #12. Both albums feature Johnny's dreamy takes on stage and film songs, and Tender boasts arrangements by the great Don Costa

5.0 out of 5 stars WELCOME RETURN FOR JOHNNY'S RARE MERCURY ALBUMS 30 Oct 2012
By A. POLLOCK TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
The longevity of the Johnny Mathis recording career has now spanned fifty-six years with every hope of a new album being released for the on-going pleasure of his vast fan-base. However, backtracking to his earlier output, those with worn-out vinyl will welcome the fact Real Gone Music has invaded the vaults and selected a batch of Mathis albums for release on CD for the first time and they are special as they represent the period when the singer left US Columbia in 1963 and signed a three-year contract with Mercury Records following the promise of financial gain, artistic control and ownership of the recorded masters (Global Records). So far so good, but despite Johnny's usual high vocal standards and excellent choice of material, these Mercury albums somehow failed to reach their deserving public despite the UK distribution deal through HMV, with the result they soon disappeared from view except for selected tracks chosen for THE GLOBAL MASTERS two-disc release in 1997 and a Christmas collection.

TENDER IS THE NIGHT, Johnny's initial Mercury release of 1964 had conductor Don Costa providing arrangements just as he had on occasions at Columbia, with no discernible change in pace or style. The title theme-song heads other movie-linked numbers like LAURA, APRIL LOVE and CALL IRRESPONSIBLE whilst casting a backward glance at A DREAM IS A WISH YOUR HEART MAKES from Disney's CINDERELLA. Richard Rodgers is represented by his work with Lorenz Hart - the beautiful SHIP WITHOUT A SAIL and alone for his appealing title song for Broadway's then-current NO STRINGS. Johnny also retains the Broadway source to grab the plaintive WHERE IS LOVE? (OLIVER) and SOMEWHERE (WEST SIDE STORY) whilst oldie I CAN'T GIVE YOU ANYTHING BUT LOVE is rendered in a quirky but romantic version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Johnny Mathis at Mercury... 26 Oct 2012
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
These albums are with Don Costa and Jack Feierman and bring together wonderful ballads many from films and Broadway with the highlight for me being that wonderful and evocative 1940s song "Laura". made available on this new to me label and at an attractive price they will no doubt fill the gaps in the collections of British collectors. Nice artwork and liners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two of the very best Mathis albums 26 Oct 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have every single Mathis album this great artist has produced. These two LPs issued in the sixties were up there with the very best and were always favourites of mine. They portray Johnny Mathis at his very best. They are a 'must buy' for all his many fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Majic 25 Oct 2012
Format:Audio CD
Johnny Mathis is one of our favourite artists and has been for very many years. We are lucky enough to have most of his recordings and our only regret is that it is such a long time since he toured the U.K [never give up hoping]
I pre-ordered this album as a birthday present for my husband and it arrived before the estimated delivery date, much to my delight as we were going on holiday and I wanted to take it with me.As he doesn't go online he was unaware of the release so it was a surprise for him.I had read and heard so much hype about digital remastered and was unsure if it was just that, hype, but thought I would be optomistic and was not disappointed.

If you are a true and loyal fan then don't miss this latest offering from a classic performer. It is beautiful, outstanding and has given yet another dimension to this amazing man.

So until he realises how many of us are longing to see him perform over here we will have to be content with his music.
