Mogwai's music is impossible to define, and that's half its appeal. Heavy guitars surge, keyboards fade in and out of the foreground, complex rhythms drive. But no vocals. Well, hardly any.

The Glasgow band will never get daytime radio play, but I don't expect they care. Hopefully they will keep on turning out exquisite, passionate masterpieces like this, true blends of the most brilliant light and the blackest shade. This is their first album, in fact a collection of eps, but for me it's their best. Buy it and love it.

quietly, quietly 17 Nov 2003

Shorter and more soothing than some of their other works, this collection of earlier Mogwai recordings is a treasure. Tracks such as 'a place for parks' and 'summer' show the more sensitive side of the Scottish group, a side which in my opinion was better translated into their music in their earlier recordings. A gem of a record, waiting quietly to steal your heart.

Mogwai fans - you know what to expect: there are some quiet bits and there are some very loud bits, but most of all there are some overwhelmingly beautiful bits. This album is worth buying just for the ridiculously, mind-blowingly and any other positive adjective you can think of-ly good Helicon 1, plus you get the initial version of Summer, which they tend to play live. More like Young Team than Come on die young, the emotions are all still there. Hear the sound of the dinosaurs becoming extinct during Summer, and then let your heart break during the gorgeous melancholy of Tuner (with some nice vocals thrown in - shock horror!). Oh, and you get arguably the greatest song title of all time: I am not batman. What more could you ask for?
