This is a pretty neat book. It starts off with "Ten chirpy chicks, out walking in a line. One joins some puppies in the bright sunshine!" With each page turn one of the chicks decides to stay behind with an animal until there is only one left. Finally, on the last page all the chicks are reunited.
The book uses a good variety of descriptive words ("playful chicks", "noisy chicks", etc) that keep it interesting for young readers/listeners. The story also has a nice flow to the rhyme. The pictures are appealing with a different animal portrayed on each page. Best of all are the chicks. They are actually formed out of plastic and protrude (securely) out of the pages. My son loves feeling them poking out. The book has a section cut out around each plastic chick so that when one chick is "left behind" the rest remain. This is a great book for any young child.
