5.0 out of 5 stars Review of my life!, 14 Jul 2002
By Steve (London) - See all my reviews
The book is premised on the fact that employers no longer give a flying fig about employees. They make us redundant at their whim. So it's up to us to take charge for our own career development.

Advice and exercises designed to make you question your values, motivations, interests and skills.

Ten chapters covering:
1. Know what you want to do
2. Find out whether you have the right skills
3. Make things happen
4. Negotiate for what you want
5. Boost your skills
6. Thrive on change
7. Learn to problem solve
8. Network for success
9. Raise your profile to attract headhunters
10. Move on to a great future

The book was a bit short (106 pages). But that was both a good and a bad thing. Sometimes it didn't give as many examples as I would have liked. But the big plus was that I didn't have to wade through loads of rubbish like in some of these management type books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise but packed with ideas to make ya think, 19 Jun 2002
By Ed Mallory (London, UK) - See all my reviews
Relatively short book (which for me is a good thing - why wade through unnecessary words). I was lucky to receive a pre-print of the book.

Lots of exercises to make you think about the direction of your career and life in general outside of work. Some of the exercises involve sitting down with a blank sheet of paper. Some of the exercises involve talking to colleagues and friends to get their opinion. Nicely structured exercises without being too prescriptive.

I think the book suits people who are able to be critical of themselves. Also, you need to put aside the time to do the exercises properly. Just reading the book in one go won't get you anywhere.
