Product Description

Book Description

A splendidly witty, diverting and charmingly illustrated gift book of alternative films top tens.

Product Description

Is Richard E Grant's 'Withnail' a far superior screen drunk to Jimmy Stewart in Harvey? What is the cinema's most tragic farewell, its most ingenious plot-twist, its most shocking murder? And why do Robert De Niro's characters behave so badly to women? All film fans keep mental records of their post-show arguments in the pub. This book is a rollicking collection of such 'Top Tens', written by stars from Steven Soderberg and the Coen Brothers to Gilbert Adair and DBC Pierre. If you want to know the Ten Most-Deserved Oscars or Ten So-Called 'Turkeys' That Are Actually Brilliant, then look no further, Ten Bad Dates with De Niro could be your perfect match.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 21 Nov 2007
This review is from: Ten Bad Dates with De Niro: A Book of Alternative Movie Lists (Hardcover)
This is a great book: smart, funny and interesting.
The lists (compiled by film-makers, film critics and just plain old film watchers) are varied and interesting (from the Ten Most Richly Deserved Oscars to Ten Worst Haircuts) and written with enthusiasm, wit and intelligence.
It's like having a night in the pub with your friends who know a lot about films but don't limit their viewing to art house retrospectives. Brilliant - and a great present for anyone who knows a bit about films and wants to enjoy finding out more.

This review is from: Ten Bad Dates with De Niro: A Book of Alternative Movie Lists (Hardcover)
There are actually 460 pages of lists in this book, despite what the product details say, and that is quite alot for any film buff to mull over. You can start at the beginning and work your way through it or dip into it anywhere, for example The 10 most gratuitous uses of sex & nudity in the oeuvre of Paul Verhoeven, was a fun place to start ( have you seen the hair dyeing scene in Blackbook?) The 10 best endings will be quickly checked. Wild Bunch no 1 of course, and Dont Look Now, complete with spioiler, is there too. I havent finished it yet, but its a book you'll keep going back to

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Present, 13 Aug 2009

This review is from: Ten Bad Dates with De Niro: A Book of Alternative Movie Lists (Hardcover)
Whilst a book of basically-pointless lists would probably seem a bit of an indulgence to buy for oneself, this makes a fine gift for any film buff. There are something like 70 lists in all, ranging from "Ten Greatest Movie Trilogies" to a list of the most unusual places where severed heads turn up in the movies. (Although the illustration on the front-cover of the hardback may be a little misleading as it depicts De Niro's Taxi Driver character and ten potential dates for him from other, non-De Niro, films - but virtually all the lists in the book are about actual films, not hypothetical "wouldn't it be good if..." ideas.) Each list has a brief introduction and each entry in each list gets a paragraph explaining the film's inclusion (a format familiar to anyone who frequents The Onion's A.V. Club - they are bringing out their own list book shortly I believe). Some of the contributors are well-known film-makers, but all the writers are knowledgeable and amusing and the book makes for quite addictive reading (and the potential for perpetuating drinking games is vast). It will remind the reader of films s/he has loved or loathed or always meant to see and it will tip them off about films they have yet to discover - what more could you ask for?
