...and good grief, what explicit porn it is! I like erotic fiction as much as the next person, but this transcended a lot of the boundaries I'd previously read. This was the first Lora Leigh book I've read, and I was looking forward to trying something different, but now I won't be in any real hurry to rush out and read the rest of this series, unfortunately, unless they're a marked improvement from book one!
A summary: Callan is a genetic freak, a mixture of human and lion-- and the shadowy forces of the Genetics Council are after him. Merinus is a journalist and investing him, also wanting to help him. There is undeniable chemistry between them, but this `mating frenzy' could have disastrous consequences for everyone...
In my eyes, this series had real potential, and I'm sure that's still in there somewhere, but that was ultimately overridden by the weak writing and poor characterisation. The characters in this novel just seem to be there to have sex and that's it. Considering the focus of the novel I was hoping to find out a bit about them, but what titbits you did find out were all rather rushed and not really expanded upon before the frothy sex scenes started up again. The dialogue was also a bit stilted and somewhat forced in my opinion. To be honest, I was also a bit irritated by the constant use of the word c**t. By about the fifth or sixth time it was used, it was growing irksome. It was purely there for the shock value, nothing more.
As I've said, I'm a big fan of erotic fiction, but my first foray into both Lora Leigh and Ellora's Cave wasn't all that promising. Some of the gay fiction I've read recently, as well as books published by Cheek (especially Emma Holly) have a lot more spice than this. The characters are also better written, I can assure you. The one thing I will say is that this storyline is certainly imaginative, though it never really gets off the ground. Maybe it's better developed later in the series? One can surely hope so.
This is worth a read, purely for curiosity purposes, but do yourself a favour and bag yourself a cheap copy if you can. This is NOT worth the full price asked for by Amazon- I paid it because there was no alternative at the time and to be honest I'm a bit gutted.
