On the basis of reading the reviews for the book, I decided to give it a read. I wish I had passed on it. The author just asks the reader to suspend belief far far too much.
- a very famous circus performer will drop everything to "go undercover" as a nurse to spy on her father's enemy when she hasn't spoken to her father in years after he killed her beloved horse.
- a straightlaced Marquis will completely act against his lifelong ideals and beliefs when he meets a woman who is outspoken and who is stacked.
- the Marquis is kidnapped from his own home with Bow Street runners in the house and on the property; but, the only person who sees the kidnapping is the erstwhile undercover nurse.
- the Marquis' cousin - a rakehell Earl - will encourage the Marquis to unbend and live a little by marrying a servant.
- the circus performer's father will immediately give up his quest for vengance when his daughter rides to his rescue.
...and the list goes on and on.
A pleasant enough read; but, falls into the area of an ok read that you might do better to check it out from your local library or buy it used.

4.0 out of 5 starsUnconvincing story but fun read3 May 2004
By S. Reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Very funny with an unusual heroine and plenty of atmosphere. My reason for not rating it at 5 stars is primarily it's unbelieveable premise and resolution. The heir to a dukedom marrying a trick horse rider? Sure. Nevertheless, Alex's totally priggishness matched with Mary's say-and-do-anything openness is ready-made for laughs galore. Britton's earthy sense of humor gets a real workout here. Still Britton manages some poignancy with Mary's feelings of inadequacy.
The other area of discord (apart from the unlikeliness of the pairing and the unbelieveableness of Alex's willingness to give up everything, including any sort of livelihood, for her) is Alex's daughter; she serves merely as a way to get Mary into, and back into, Alex's life. The brat has no other usefulness.
If I could give 3 & 1/2 stars, I would. But Britton's LOL humor and unusual heroine force me into giving this book 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 starsA Wonderful Author!23 May 2004

I'm back on Amazon to write my second review ever and once again it's for a Pamela Britton book. I discovered this author by accident and all I can say is THANK GOODNESS. If you, like me, have become tired of some of the "tried and true" romance authors out there, try Pamela Britton. If you, like me, like to laugh out loud and then cry, try Pamela Britton.
Tempted is a book that held me from the first page. Mary is a heroine who will make you laugh. When she arrives at the hero's doorstep, you'll wonder how two people from such different worlds could ever get together. But that's the fun of the story. Watching Mary captivate Alex was some of the best story telling I've read in recent years. Wow. I am sincerely impressed.
Scandal is next and I can't wait!!
By the way, I noticed that one reviewer said the book "fizzles." I don't know how much merrit you should put in a reviewer who reads all five of an authors books when she clearly doesn't like her work only to come to Amazon to say nasty things. Seems supicious to me.
