Product Description

Cade Byron returned from his work for the foreign service and buries himself in work at his country estate. Wounded in body and spirit, Cade turns his back on both friends and family, preferring to grieve his losses in solitude. But when a snowstorm strands a beautiful young woman on his doorstep, all of Cade's carefully crafted defenses will be put to the test. Meg Amberley is determined to make the best of her snowbound time with the cranky Lord Byron. Drawing him out of his seclusion, Meg soon discovers a man she wants to spend more and more time with. But when a passionate encounter uncovers dark secrets from Cade's past, Meg must decide if she's willing to risk her heart on a man believed to be incapable of love. Forced to pretend an engagement, will Meg be able to break down the walls around Cade's heart, or will the scars of his past prove too much? --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

Miss Margaret 'Meg' Amberley arrives at Lord Cade Byron's home in search for shelter from the snowstorm. At first, Cade is annoyed she's interrupted his solitude, but agrees and let's her stay. But when the snow continues, they are forced to spend time with each other. Since returning from the war, he's scarred emotionally and physically and has become an alcoholic recluse. Since the death of her parents, Meg had been on her way to Scotland to live with another relative. Meg is keen to learn more about her handsome stranger. Just as she thinks she's going to break through, the snowstorm is over and she can go. However, a nosy neighbour shows up and when he sees Meg and Cade have been alone together, Cade has to think fast to save the innocent lady's reputation. Cade tells him Meg is his fiancée. It's obvious the neighbour will spread the news and Meg is worried. Cade tells her that he did it to save her. But they will continue this facade, even introducing her to his family and giving her a season in London in hopes shed find another husband. Meg accepts but when she becomes close to his family, begins to hate herself for the deception.

Over time, both develop feelings for one another. Cade hates her suitors and Meg doesn't understand why since it was his idea for her to find another. But when he learns someone has offered for Meg, Cade cannot take it anymore. Meg disappears, upset Cade hasn't claimed her as she'd hoped. Cade seeks Meg out and tries to win her back.

Overall, the book was brilliant. I've already read book 3 in this series with Edward Byron and Claire and thought that was good, but this was better! You really feel for both protagonists in this story, and find yourself hoping they'll get together.

not that good 26 Feb 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I bought this book because I read "Seduced by his Touch" first. If I had read "Tempted by his kiss" first I would NOT have read any other books in the series. The story is a little cliché, and the end scene where they were at the abandoned house was too unrealistic. I was bored reading some scenes in the book.

Nothing about this book seems original. The cover artwork is just like thousands of other Avon books (i.e. toe-curlingly cheesy), the blurb on the back overblown, the gushing recommendation from another Avon author, the 'faux engagement' plot, the brooding hero, the rather pushy and independent heroine... the list goes on.

However, despite this - despite the fact that I felt I had read this story before in many different guises - I did enjoy it. The author's writing style is basic and nothing special and yet I didn't find myself bored. The characterisation is as one might imagine - not particularly deep, described rather than shown, and yet it worked well enough for me. As usual, historical accuracy was dodgy at times, mainly with regard to dialogue where people spoke American to each other, and I was very unsure if many of the names would ever have appeared in 19th Century England. But despite that, I liked this book as a light, gentle, non-taxing read. If one can overlook the unlikelihood of some events (as I could) and just go along with the tale, it is one that many readers will enjoy. Apparently the start of a series, it looks like one that should make good holiday reading.
