Product Description

CD Description

The Temptations cut this live album in 1966 at the height of their first wave of popularity (the band would experience success in another incarnation in the late '60s and early '70s). On this 17-track set, the Temps marry their trademark smooth crooning and superb harmonies with a blazing, in-concert energy. Still in their original line-up here, Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, Paul and Otis Williams, and Melvin Franklin take turns singing lead and lending background support, showcasing the group's vocal versatility and panache.
Theset is comprised of the Temps' earliest hits, including twoof Smokey Robinson's finest songs, the loping, romantic "MyGirl" and the powerhouse "Get Ready", which is given a smoking, double-time treatment on stage. Tunes by Motown-stable composers Edward Holland and Norman Whitfield also get spinshere, as do covers of the Beatles' "Yesterday" and Kern/Hammerstein's "Ol' Man River". A concert highlight is undoubtedly "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", which spotlights Eddie Kendricks's soulful tenor. Edgier than their studio releases (a tight-knit combo backs the group here, without a string arrangement in sight), TEMPTATIONS LIVE! is one of strongest live R&B albums of its era.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!!, 2 Oct 2007
I have been a massive fan of the Temptations for a few years and have many of their recordings but I was recommended by other Tempts fans to buy this album and I'm sooo glad I did. It really is fantastic. Recorded in October 1966 in a small club in Detroit, the album perfectly showcases why the Tempts were in my opinion one of the greatest acts that Motown ever produced.

The Tempts were on top form with all five legendary group members present and accounted for. What's so great about this album is that you can really sense the magic of the Temptations as unlike many of today's musical acts, they actually SANG and DANCED live, not only that but they did it exceptionally well. All of the guys sound great live, particularly Paul Williams and David Ruffin because of the intensity of their voices.

I also love the band, particularly the drummer, he really added something special to the live versions of the guys hits. It is interesting to hear the Temptations tracks performed live as it adds another dimension to their music and proves that it can still sound good without being in a studio setting.

My favourite songs on the album is 'Dont Look Back' with Paul Williams singing lead and The Melody of Songs at the beginning of the disc, although I love hearing all of the tracks as I find its an album that can be listened to the whole way through. This is really what true entertainment and talent is all about and the proof is there to hear as the mainly female crowd very loudly show their approval of the guys' performances(this is particularly clear in 'Don't Look Back'!).

What I also love about the Temptations is that they were able to sing contemporary RnB songs as well as the classic standards of the day such as 'Ol Man River'.This is really an excellent album and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to hear what a real performance should be about. Top Marks.
