Product Description

England, 1815

The eldest of three sisters, Lady Alexandra Chase has always done what was expected of her. But when the man she's loved since her girlhood returns from a long spell abroad, she quite suddenly finds herself hoping the fine lord her brother has picked for her won't propose. She decides that if he does, she'll quite improperly turn him down—that is, until the man of her hopes and dreams informs her he has no intention of marrying her.

The last time Tristan Nesbitt saw Alexandra, he was a common man with no hope of ever wedding the daughter of a marquess. Seven years later, he's now Lord Hawkridge, which should make him eminently suitable for the woman who long ago captured his heart. But a dreadful scandal has tarnished his name in England—a scandal so horrid that marrying Alexandra would ruin not only her flawless reputation but her whole family. For Alexandra's own good, he must fight his relentless desires and stay far away…

More About the Author

I decided to become a writer in the third grade (or, as my Canadian friends call it, grade three), after winning a "Why My Mother is the Greatest" essay contest and having my entry published in a major newspaper. Seeing my words in print was a thrill! But everyone told me it's too hard for novelists to get published, so after college I spent fourteen years as the CEO of my own jewelry store chain before writing my first book. A mistake? Maybe...but my first heroine, Amethyst, was a jeweler, so at least I took advantage of that wise old saying, "Write what you know." And I learned a good lesson: Don't let other people tell you what you can or can't do!

I write humorous historical romance mostly set in England and Scotland in the 17th and 19th centuries (Restoration and Regency periods). I've been oh-so-lucky to see my books hit bestseller lists all over the world and win awards including the Golden Quill and Booklist's Top 10 Romance of the Year, making this second career a real dream come true. I live in Southern California with my husband, our three young adult children, and one constantly shedding cat, and I still think my mother is the greatest!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice book but should not be set in England. 10 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Please consider writing your delightful romances set in a venue you know. It throws one quite out of the story to have so many historical and social errors! An English gentleman going for a sheriff? Ladies hobnobbing in kitchens? Servants with absolutely no concept of manners? Ladies scrabbling on a ballroom floor to pick up food? What is going on?

4.0 out of 5 stars All right I suppose 9 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well the story line for me wasn't too bad. But like a few of the other reviews here I would say that they are right in the fact that the cultural mistakes were of the simplist and therefor very offputting making it seem that no research had been done at all. I also felt that the story was beefed up with non essentials making it too long.
Would I recommend the book? yes if you take into account these things and comments by other reviewers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tempted to read the trilogy 18 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A wonderful easy to read book with a great story. Even though it was quite a long read it wasn't too drawn out and flowed lovely. Although the villain a little obvious the reasons for them being so never materialized until the end. The romance and love scenes were very heart warming. This was one of the nicest books I've read in a while. Well worth a read

This was not the worst romance I've ever read, but it does have considerable flaws. The main one is the glaring lack of historical authenticity. Not only do the characters sound like 21st century Americans doing a clumsy approximation of how they imagine 19th century English people spoke, but the author plainly doesn't have the first idea about 19th century manners, customs or social etiquette either. An unmarried gentleman and an unmarried young lady of the upper gentry do not address each other by their first names, and would NOT be left alone in a room together, under any circumstances. And three young, unmarried sisters would not be left to run a castle* by themselves with no mature female supervision, such as a maiden aunt or other appropriate chaperone. Brothers and sisters do not dance with each other (the author never read Jane Austen's 'Emma', obviously). Young ladies do not scamper about kitchens baking cookies, and CERTAINLTY don't go handing out said confections at a ball like servants! Nor does a young lady gnaw a chicken leg in a carriage like some common oik.

*Do Americans believe that all the English nobility live in castles? And how is it that in three families of the upper nobility, all of the older generation has conveniently died, leaving the young twenty-something men to inherit, and all these young unmarried ladies galavanting about without supervision?

All that aside, it was a fluffy, easy read. But it did drag a little in places. The first third of the book tries to be an Austen-esque comedy of manners, as the love-struck pair meet again after many years and strive to overcome all personal, familial and societal objections to their union.
