Victoria Roberts composes a solid debut novel with the release TEMPTATION IN A KILT. Strong characters and beautiful storylines establish this author as an engaging new voice.
Wanting a better life for herself, Lady Rosalia Armstrong decides to run away to the Scottish Highlands after her parents forced her engagement to a man she does not wish to marry. On her journey she meets Laird Ciaran MacGregor, a man refusing to leave the beautiful woman to her own defenses. Ciaran feels honor bound to escort this bold lass to her final destination, Glengarry, in order to keep her safe. Rosalia is grateful for the assistance, but eager to start her new life away from her abusive parents. Now the journey is proving to be a trial for both Rosalia and Ciaran because she is slowly realizing this temptation in a kilt may be too hard to resist.
There is just something about highlanders and the women who love them. Victoria Roberts encourages this phenomenon in her debut novel TEMPTATION IN A KILT. This novel takes readers on a journey of a traditional romance between two unique individuals. The development is incredibly sweet and emotionally charged to satisfy reader's craving for a worthwhile romance. You also have a little drama added in with warring clans and new enemies to captivate your interest. All the elements are typically the same as other highlander romances, but it isn't something that leads to predictability, which is what makes TEMPTATION IN A KILT an absolute enjoyable read.
I loved Rosalia's characters by the way she was so realistic and easy to relate to. She was never sure of herself, because she always felt she wasn't a great beauty. Yet it wasn't a debilitating insecurity that made you feel pity for her, rather it made you respect her because she worked so hard to overcome her issues. It was so natural to feel an alliance with her character and to understand where she was coming from. She did experience the occasional doubt of Ciaran's feelings for her but you could always end up admiring her for the strength she showed in every other aspect of the novel. In this novel, Rosalia was standing up for herself for the first time. I adored how falling in love with Ciaran didn't stop her from finding out who she was really supposed to be. Ciaran didn't help shape the new Rosalia, but just accepted her for the person she was meant to be.
Ciaran was such a charming and caring hero. He was a noble laird that took care of his people with a kind manner and extended that kindness to his family. He had a very protective nature that afforded him little time to let his guard down. You are still afforded the occasional glimpse at his softer side in his intimate moments with Rosalia and it was a refreshing change to such a serious character. Still, Ciaran was also somewhat frustrating because of the reasoning behind his various actions. He denies his feelings for Rosalia for so long because of a vow he made to his deceased father. While I'm sure it was supposed to appear as a strength to honor such a bond, I really thought it was a weakness. I was constantly hoping his love for her would overcome all, but Ciaran was pretty stubborn. And honestly, I did not feel it was a very good reason. Fortunately, it was a small flaw in an overall charming character. Ciaran was such a kind soul, and you easily realized he was the perfect match for Rosalia.
There was a lot to love about Rosalia and Ciaran's blossoming romance. Rosalia's character wasn't a stick figure, and Ciaran found that absolutely impossible to resist. It was refreshing to see a highlander appreciate a curvy lass and Ms Roberts created plenty of scenes that let Ciaran voice his appreciation. While you have Ms Roberts including a few very passionate moments, basically fanning the flames between these two characters, it is never fully explored. When it ended, I was left unsatisfied, for lack of a better word, without having their romance consummated. It quickly took this novel from a steamy romance to a sweet romance. It was all heat with no sex and I wasn't really happy about it.
Still, it's easy to overlook the small flaws and appreciate TEMPTATION IN A KILT for its success at conveying a great story. Mainly because Victoria Roberts does an excellent job of developing an emotional romance that warms your heart. You easily become involved with these characters and happily follow their journey. This is a solid start by this debut author and only hints at the promising work that is sure to follow. A very charming and touching story is what you will find with TEMPTATION IN A KILT. Mix in a little drama with a chilling villain and you have a great story about the highlanders we all know and love.
