Review
Simian Mobile Disco is the work of two men: Jas Shaw James Ford. In 2005 they jettisoned away from the wreckage of the vastly underrated electro-pop four-piece Simian to become rave-up merchants of no little acclaim, and two years later released debut album Attack Decay Sustain Release. The pair are among the most in-demand producers, DJs and remixers operating in the UK today.
So it’s no real surprise that this album is large, a towering monolith of wonky disco-textured dimensions and pure unadulterated indulgence, spitting out chunks of acidic boogie like diamond mirrorball shards. Unlike its predecessor, though, Temporary Pleasure features an array of high-profile guest vocalists, each adding a new dimension to the duo’s sound.
Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys appears on luscious opener Cream Dream; Beth Ditto bursts a lung or two on Cruel Intentions; Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor lends his talents to the condensed carnival of Bad Blood; and Chris Keating from prog-rock oddballs Yeasayer provides vocals on baffling recent single Audacity of Huge. Also along for the ride are Telepathe, Jamie Lidell and Young Fathers, and each plays a part in the house party album of the season.
Because Temporary Pleasure is that, and more besides: an intense blast of shape-throwing marvellousness that rivals The Chemical Brothers at their superstar peak. You probably wouldn't want to hear it on repeat for 24 hours or anything, but for its 40-minute run time, SMD hog your attention in ways you'll find almost indecent (but in a good way, naturally). Mr Gill is indeed correct. SMD's 2007 'Attack Decay Sustain Release'
was a very fine album. Full of gritty, dirty energy and big beats.
Unlike some of their more po-faced peers Mr Ford and Mr Shaw
have a light touch and a sense of humour, qualities often lacking
in a genre better known for self-centred navel-gazing.
Their second album 'Temporary Pleasure' is yet another bundle of fun.
Rhythmically varied , melodically sound and lyrically interesting.
The well-chosen vocal collaborators contribute immensly
varied tonal colour and dynamic range to the project.
In some ways it's a little sad that this album has been released
so late in the season. It had every chance of being one of
Summer 2009's big events. Better later than never however.
All ten tracks in the 'standard' edition rise to the occasion
both alone and as a conceptual whole.
The production is as crisp as it comes. Beautifully lucid and
well-differentiated sonic ideas bounce around gleefully chasing
their tails like a field full of happy puppies. (Hold that image!)
Opening track 'Cream Dream' is a cracking appetizer. Gruff Rhys is
clearly enjoying his vocal duties. The word-play, as Mr Gill has
already indicated, is both witty and funny in equal measure.
Ms Ditto bumps and grinds her way through 'Cruel Intentions' with
disco-diva aplomb. Everything she touches seems to glitter and glow.
'Off The Map' is a personal favorite. Jamie Lidell's performance,
amidst a Moroder-esque synthesiser ostinato and sundry crashes,
bleeps and wallops, is a wonderfully barmy tour de force.

Following on from their excellent debut, Attack Decay Sustain Release, sees Messrs Ford and Shaw upping the guest quota this time round. Beth Ditto (showing she can effortlessly do disco diva as well as rock chick), Jamie Lidell, Yeasyer's Chris Keating and Super Furry's Gruff all helping make their associated tracks standouts. The latter two's nonsense rhymes, "She was a power station leaking radiation and it got right under my skin" and "I got that grape kool-aid filled swimming pool" being particular highlights. The Todd Rundgren sampling Synthesise still sounds just as good as when it first surfaced in May so it's a shame that Bad Blood with Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor and Ambulance featuring Telepathe bring the the album to a somewhat forgettable close. A tad pedestrian towards the end and missing a manic moment like Tits and Acid from it's predecessor but a Simian Mobile Disco album firing on 2 of 3 cylinders is still a worthwhile purchase.

Great album moves on nicely from the last one with a good mix of vocal tracks and beeps and beats. If you like LCD soundsystem or Chemical brothers then you'll like this.
