Product Description

Two LPs of exciting big band music ('Tempestuous Trumpet' / 'The Big Band's Back in Town') performed by trumpet virtuoso Doc Severinsen and his orchestra. They are appearing here for the first time on CD and have been remastered in glorious stereo.

Trumpet virtuoso Doc Severinsen was orchestra leader of the Johnny Carson hosted Tonight Show from 1967 to 1992 and also had a prolific recording career. Both of these albums from the early 1960s, released on the Command label and produced by Enoch Light, offer the listener thrilling big band music.

Here are two more collector's items from the Command label which Sepia have carefully transferred to CD for our musical enjoyment. All the usual high quality elements are here with stunning artwork, liner notes and faithful sound transfers. Pricewise yet another snip that allows high quality big band recordings to be yours at a very reasonable outlay.

Was given a second hand copy of Tempestuous Trumpet back in the mid 60's.
Haven't heard it since the mid 90's. Good deal with the other album. By today's standards, good quality sound.

Compromises found on this release. 25 Nov. 2013
By Paulo Roberto Elias - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I finally got my CD from Sepia. They were very kind to send the disc before it was released in the UK but the usual customs bureaucracy prevented me for getting it sooner.

After listening to it, I have good and bad news:

The good news is that the remastering work is first class, on both Tempestuous Trumpet and Big Band's albums. There isn't a hint of compression or frequency limiting. The sound comes cleaner and clearer, with a particular good bass response, in regard to the Lp versions. Dynamic range is, therefore, compatible with the sound of a master tape, whichever generation the restorator used.

Big Band's album is newer and presents a slightly more refined sound. But Tempestuous Trumpet has Doc Severinsen's attack unsurpassed. To me, at least, it is his best Command album ever.

Now, the bad news: on Tempestuous Trumpet "Baubles, Bangles and Beads", and "Sleepy Lagoon" were shortened considerably. On Baubles, the ping-pong stereo intro was modified with an intrusive drum that was never present in the Lp.

I checked with Sepia, and was informed that they had to do it for disc space, otherwise both albums would not fit.

As far as I am concerned, and given the excellent remastering job, I would rather have Tempestuous Trumpet on a separate disc, and no cuts.

It is a pity that this is the third time around reissues have compromises. On the latest Command box released by Goldies, one of the tracks of the Provocative Percussion vol. 2 set, the track "Speak Low" was replaced by something else. On the Jasmine's Swingin' Dixie , Al Hirt set, volume 4 is nowhere to be seen, which makes the set incomplete.

With so many technical resources nowadays, and with current playback systems sounding better and affordable, still we do not see preservation efforts fully realized on any disc media.

At Long Last!! Command Records LP's on remastered CD & MP3! 17 Nov. 2013
By Swingjazzman - Published on Amazon.com

After waiting 25+ years in the digital music (CD) era, we trumpet players and fans have finally got what we have been waiting for! Doc's early albums from the sixties sound great on this two-fer from Sepia. The sound is EXCELLENT! Especially the Tempestuous Trumpet tracks, which have crystal clear high end and showcase Mr. Severinsen's masterful trumpet playing to the fullest extent. This is some of the best, most virtuosic trumpet/big band music you will ever hear. I would list highlight tracks, but there aren't any, they are all fabulous, and great arrangements too. It was these very tracks that introduced me to trumpet and jazz back in the 70's. Get this CD or the MP3 version, you will be thrilled!

Doc is one of the greatest trumpet players ever 29 Nov. 2013
By Allan - Published on Amazon.com

I totally agree with the other two reviewers. Yes Doc is one of the greatest trumpet players of all time. We are so lucky that we have finally got CD companies that reissue these classic obscure albums for the trumpet world. Wounded Bird has also son a fine job with the reissuing of Doc albums. But where are the bonus takes, Woops ! probably Doc didn't need to do any second takes. Keep the reissues coming. We still need the full version of the modern Doc on CD.

Doc Severinson, one of the greatest trumpeters of the world, places perfectly on all cuts. The studio musicians behind him are fantastic. I love big bands and this recording 'fits the bill'.
