4.0 out of 5 stars Gothic revisited, 5 Jun 2003
By
A.K.Farrar "AKF" (Timisoara, Romania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Tempest (Paperback)
Firmly in the tradition of the Gothic Novel, this 'who done it' explores the city of Venice at carnival time - complete with a costume party, fog and dead body. One thing strongly in its favour is the ability to suggest mystery without the need to sink into the supernatural.

There are a series of strong sexual undercurrents and a healthy dig at the world of sterile academia (a replacement for the cloisters of the original Gothic tales).

I do like the characterisation - there is a strong detective, an effete art critic and several strong female characters.

A good read (if not quite up there with Frankenstein).

5.0 out of 5 stars Venetian intrigue to tempt the intrigued reader.., 7 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Tempest (Paperback)
This is an exciting and unusual book that is not easy to put down - not least because of the sumptuous and ornate setting, the intriguing city of Venice, which the reader experiences keenly due to the skills of the author. No mere travelogue but a murder mystery and emotional drama, all entwined within the smells, sights and sounds of that enigmatic city - really, an excellent read that is far from being a run-of-the mill formula thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't look now, 24 May 2001
By
This review is from: The Tempest (Paperback)
You half expect Donald Sutherland or Julie Christie to stumble into the pages of this highbrow murder mystery. Murky, damp, rotting Venice as seen through the eyes of a lecherous student who finds himself tangled in an art forgery web. Very different and oddly intriguing.
