5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Soul Reissue 10 May 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A lovely soul album from a rather obscure artist. Willie Wright comes from the John Lucien/Terry Callier school of mellow soul, although his music still has bite; as evidenced by his cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Right On For The Darkness" (included here as a bonus track).

His "Telling The Truth" album from 1977 includes some stunning tracks, especially the upbeat "Jackie's Song" and the achingly beautiful "Son, Don't Let Life Pass You By". Once again Numero have done an excellent reissue job, going so far as to include a 5 inch single as part of the package. This is a piece of rare soul that's definitely worth investigating. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Who said true talent always shines through? 27 July 2013
Format:Audio CD
I would suggest only the wonderful Numero label would be likely to unearth a soul gem such as this. Recorded independently in 1977; this was Willie Wrights only album and it is a fine example as to why I consider so many of the best records ever were/are hiding amongst the pop cheese of the seventies. As already suggested there is a hint of Terry Callier here and I would also agree that there are tones similar to Lou Rawls in certain songs. Although soulful throughout there is quite a strong acoustic folk feel to much of the album similar to one of my other favourites by Lou Bond.Mr. Wright plays some fantastic flute on this album and the accompanying delightful female vocals were apparently courtesy of his estranged daughter. All wonderful stuff, simple songs performed faultlessly and obviously crafted with tender care. This really deserves some serious commercial recognition. BUY THIS! An album of adult music, made for music lovers. Sadly true talent did not shine through for Mr. Wright to receive any recognition for the serious effort made here!

5.0 out of 5 stars never heard of Willie Wright ? me either, what a shame 22 Feb 2011
By James Prial - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I was shopping in a record store, while they were playing this record. Man, shopping never was so easy - groovy voice, gentle rhythm, good old fashioned soul..smooth as warm butter. Obscure, no idea why this guy wasn't famous at all. I asked the record store info guy who it was.. and bought the record. it's a good one

5.0 out of 5 stars A MusicalTreasure 23 April 2011
By Bebo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is a treasure! unique soul, with aspects of jazz, folk, early reggae, and mostly, superb singer-songwriter originals, to rival the best of Bob Dylan, and others of the folk and soul eras, with philosophical points set in elegant musical gems. Each song is completely different in style and story. Where has this artist been? We are so lucky to have this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy It! 17 Oct 2011

I'm sure I could count on one hand the number of recordings I own that were made in 1977, but this one transcends that time period and is just a gorgeous & funky gem of an album, with great bonus cuts. Too bad Willie didn't receive more recognition at the time, as it's surely deserved. Probably my favorite re-issue of this year. Beautiful stuff. Highly recommended.

I first heard the song from this CD, "I'm So Happy Now" on Saturday morning GMA and fell in love with it. I ordered it & like the rest of the songs as well. What a great voice---reminds me a little of Sam Cooke.
