Product Description

This practical handbook begins with the philosophy and psychology underpinning the therapeutic value of story telling. It shows how to use story telling as a therapeutic tool with children and how to make an effective response when a child tells a story to you. It is an essential accompaniment to the Helping Children with Feelings series and covers issues such as: Why story telling is such a good way of helping children with their feelings; What resources you may need in a story-telling session; How to construct your own therapeutic story for a child; What to do when children tell stories to you; Things to do and say when working with a child's story.

This book is full of ways to use metaphor in story telling with children.

It is full of useful ideas, how to create a story to incorporate metaphors
relevant to the child's problems.Lots of ways for professionals who work with children to generate a suitable story which can help children to identify with characters and scenarios, and ultimately help them to heal emotionally.

I have used some of the stories with suitable clients, and found that, so far it seems to work well.

This book gives a invaluable understanding as to how to help children through storytelling with their feelings and issues. It provides an understanding as to how a child's imagery and thinking may differ to an adult's. It is broken down into three chapters. 1.Why Storytelling is a good therapeutic tool for children, 2. How to use storytelling..., 3. How to effectively respond to a child's story.

I believe this is the book to start with. This book is under 100 pages of information that has had a profound impact on me. I recommend it as part the tool kit for any one who works with children, up to about age 14.

The use of story telling in a therapeutic manner with young people 26 Feb 2006
By M. Shannon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Clear, accessible and without jargon... this book will be a valuable tool for therapists, teachers, parents and others looking to develop alternative ways of communicating with children and young people.

It makes so much sense, I wondered why I hadn't thought of it all myself !

I also liked the print and the layout of the book.
