Product Description

Along with making music, the art of storytelling is the oldest form of enchantment as entertainment. The twenty-one stories in this anthology are written in different 'voices' - vividly individual styles - and all have come together to bring the joy of reading to whoever takes up this remarkable collection. All twenty-one writers have given their stories without any fee or royalty. The publishers of each edition in each country where the anthology is published have produced the book without receiving any profit or royalty. Musicians have given their talents for the benefit of the forty million men, women and children infected with HIV and AIDS worldwide. These writers have decided that they too wanted to contribute in some way to the fight against the pandemic disease from which no country, no individual, is safely isolated.

About the Author

This anthology is edited and introduced by Nadine Gordimer, whose many novels include The Lying Days (her first novel), The Conservationist, joint winner of the Booker Prize, Burger's Daughter, July's People, My Son's Story, None to Accompany Me, The House Gun and The Pickup. Her collections of short stories include Something Out There, Jump and, most recently, Loot. In 1991 she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. She lives in South Africa.

A classic collection 18 July 2005
Format:Paperback
This authors successfully blended beautiful stories with traditional African scenes that draws close to Achebe and popular western stories into this gripping collection. One thing for I loved about the collection are the fascinating plots and wonderful style of writing that the authors produced.. This is a genuinely intriguing collection. Also recommended: THE USURPER AND OTHER STORIES, RUNAWAY,TRIPLE AGENT DOUBLE CROSS,JULY'S PEOPLE. Start this book and you will never regret you picked it up.

Format:Paperback
I bought this book as I was intrigued by the variety and quality of the authors who have taken the time to contribute to the collection. I was also drawn by the fact that the profits go to charity. I am not generally a big fan of short stories so was dubious and slightly cynical about purchasing the book. However, I was left feeling surprised and also enlightened. Although, as with any collection I did not enjoy all of the stories, many were brilliant, touching and/or intensely powerful. Each story evokes an entirely different mood, situation and perspective. It is not a dull or monotonous, cobbled-together collection. It sings out with the diversity and talent on offer in contemporary writing today. It is a book that will offer you glimpses of unknown and well-known authors and allows you to dip in and sample their work. Short stories demand a different reading approach as they are often ambiguous and open- ended. Yet the creative process involved makes it a challenging and enjoyable experience.

Sharing for a cause 15 Jan 2006
Format:Paperback
Writers like musicians care about people and causes. They may not appear at a Live 8 concert, but when approached they can be just as generous. The result of one such approach is this highly enjoyable collection of “tales” told by well known authors from around the world. 21 authors including Nadine Gordimer, the initiator of the project, have donated a story each. The publishers, translators and designers have waived their fees and profits. All proceeds will go to HIV/AIDS education and treatment in South Africa.

This in itself would be enough reason to buy the book! Yet, there are more grounds for it. Each story, selected by the authors themselves, reflects an experience and a life situation. We find John Updike, next to Arthur Miller, Paul Theroux and Gabriel Garcia Marquez together with Amos Oz and Günter Grass… Several less known African authors, such as Njabulo Ndebele and Es’kia Mphahlel share a spot with well known Chinua Achebe. In its totality, we have been offered a smorgasbord of excellent story telling: a partial who’s who of current world literature. The stories and topics are as wide ranging as the authors’ backgrounds and perspectives. Some are more serious than others, all excel in style and expression. The ideal gift for yourself and others who enjoy a glimpse into the writing of some of the world’s literary greats. [Friederike Knabe]
