Telling Some Tales is one of the best reads so far this year, and i am still half way through reading Rebecca as well. I very much enjoyed this book, The first two or three chapters were hard work to get through but then the book comes alive several chapters in. What i like about this book is the detailed description of the acting world and the various techniques actors and actresses use to portray their characters. It is not simply a matter of memorising lines, good actors/actresses really study the background, so for example like Rebecca in which of course Anna Massey starred in as the evil Mrs Danvers one would read the book and then think about the character being portrayed. Anna Massey played her role brilliantly by the way, i love Rebecca which i have on DVD. A superb production. Anyway back to the book, i was also amazed by how many people Anna Massey knew even from childhood. Lovely insight into that. The end of the book made me choke up as it was so sad and moving.
I really enjoyed this book. It felt like attending rehearsals yourself and you get to really feel the atmosphere of what it would be like to work on stage and tv. Oh and one bit in particular made me smile. It seems Anna Massey read some Jackanory stories! I use to love that as a child myself! The book did bring back one sad memory for me though. When i was at school i adored acting and had wanted to carry on with it. But at the time i was told a deaf person had no future in acting and it could not be done. So i never did continue after i left school which i bitterly regret. Of course today there is plenty of support in place but back in the 70s and early 80s there was no support. But yes i enjoyed this book immensely, and would read it again. I was sorry when the tales came to an end and was left wanting more! Like an audience who has seen a really good show and gives an encore! I will remember this book for a long time to come.
