Book Description

10 July 2012 Old House
*As seen in the Guide Book Guide!* First published in 1839, this entertaining dictionary of provincial language aimed to record and preserves the array of England's local dialects. This is the perfect guide to yaping-about with sosse-brangles and swobbling like a true Victorian trubagully.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lexicographical japes 12 July 2012
By Alan Hansen VINE VOICE
A 19th-century guide to English regional dialect may not sound like the biggest giggle in town, but William Holloway's earnest analysis of the language used by Norfolk yokels and Kentish yobs in 1839 is a total joy. Do you know what a fond-pluff is? A muck-midden-brewart or a snurl? Are you pumple-footed or chitty-faced? A bit of a sump? Or do you just want to play old gut and jerkin? This would make an excellent gift for fans of Call My Bluff and devotees of Scrabble, or just anyone who likes to have fun with words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious 21 Mar 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is the perfect little Xmas present for an intellectual friend. I did exactly this, and he loved it because it had loads of long, old words that he could learn and show off to people! Each to their own, but either way I would recommend it as it's really entertaining.
