Product Description

Product Description

Kathleen Hann was born into a poor working-class family in the Black Country during the depression of the nineteen thirties. She was a clever child at a time when it wasn't thought poor children could be clever, when ridicule was the only way the mediocre teachers knew how to deal with the situation. This is a book to make you laugh and cry as the author revisits her past and evokes many of the outrageous and picaresque charcters of her childhood, her youth and early womanhood. She was one of a hundred people in Shropshire chosen by the BBC to appear on the programme, The Century Speaks, in which the BBC called for people to give their views on Shropshire. This book is living history, experienced in the raw and tested on the pulses of a real participant whose vision of those times, while sympathetic, sincere and humorous, is never coloured by rose-tinted lenses. She has not given us a dry treatise of social history, but a slice of life that will forever remain with the reader.

About the Author

Kathleen Hann lives in the beautiful County of Shropshire with her husband Peter. Her son, two daughters, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren all live close by.She now has the time and energy for her many hobbies that include writing, reading, studying local and social history, photography, and collecting shaving mugs?143 at the last count! She also enjoys walking with the Telford strollers, eating out with friends and generally making up for lost time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A genuine slice of working class history, 24 July 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Tell it as it Was (Paperback)
This book is superb. What sets it apart from a lot of other autobiographies is its unique style. The author writes straight from the heart and geuinely does Tell it as it was.

The dialect and colloquialisms used in the book gives the story an incredibly personal feel which adds to the overall emotional effect. It feels as if the author is sitting next to you, telling you her story.

The book is moving and funny and really takes the reader away to a time and place far removed from today's luxuries.
I can't recommend it enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning "social history" document straight from the heart, 6 Jun 2002
This review is from: Tell it as it Was (Paperback)
Kathleen Hann has a great way with words !

This is a very cleverly written autobiographical book. The style is rather unusual, but this actually adds quite a lot to the narrative. You start off by feeling that this lovely Granny is telling you a bedtime story, but this is a no holds barred story, warts and all.

I particularly like the way she handles sensitive issues such as a death in the family (or even in a friends family !!)

I eagerly await Kathleens next chapter in her life story.
