...having never read Joan Lingard before, I didn't know what to expect. Well, what a revelation. Lingard is a masterful writer. Her prose style is direct and very immediate - she has you gripped from the start, and this book is indeed a rattling yarn. The Spanish Civil War is, in all honesty, a period of history of which I know little. Lingard cunningly filled in the blanks in my knowledge without ever seeming like she was teaching a history lesson. Everything is seen in the context of the lives of the two protagonists, Nick and Isabel, and what an adventure they have. In some parts it is as tense as an episode of 24, in others reminiscent of Captain Corelli's Mandolin. It has just enough action and excitement to appeal to the boys and a bit of romance for the girls. A great, and very mature finale rounds off a superb book

I love this book, it isn't what I'd usually read but I couldn't find anything in the bookshop, I loved the cover of the book to start with and as I read the back of the book it sounded quite interesting and I though, why not? And I'm glad I did. Lingard is a great writer.

The story tells of Nick, a Scottish boy in his mid-teens. His father is Spanish and his mother is Scottish. During the Civil War in Spain, Nick's dad went and fought in it. The story tells of Nick's journey through Spain looking for his dad. It is just after the war but Franco still rules so Nick has to be very careful, he can only trust the people he's been given the names of. Nick meets Isabel, the problem is her father is a guard in Franco's service. Can Nick trust Isabel? The story tells us of Nick's long journey through Spain, it is a hard trip, not knowing who to trust, sickness, love and lack of food/drink.

A book for everyone, don't let the love part put you off, it just adds a little bit of bite to the story for the romance fans!

I last read this when I was 12 and loved it! My school library chucked it :( and I've been trying to find it ever since. This book is very evocative of the turmoil of ordinary young people caught up in wars, and allows the reader to get a feel for the era.
