Product Description

Review

'David Thomas has one of the most powerful and intriguing minds in the country.' The Daily Mail 'This book is one of the most harrowing I've ever read, but because of the way David turns his life around it is also inspirational' The Sun

Product Description

The inspirational true story of one man overcoming enormous odds including sexual abuse from his alcoholic mother to choose his own path in life and become a truly exceptional human being. From the age of four David was sexually abused by his alcoholic mother. He didn't understand, but he didn't have a choice. Then one day it got much worse: his stepfather turned on him, too. The beatings always started when his mother left the house. But if the violence was terrible the betrayal was even more shattering: David's mother knew but did nothing to stop it. As the nightmare of his life grew worse, David turned to petty crime. For the first time he felt powerful and in control. But deep down he knew it would destroy him. Then, one night, he saw a programme on TV that changed everything. It sparked the life-long passion that would free him from his past and make his future worth living for. A heartbreaking story of abuse, betrayal and ultimate redemption.

5.0 out of 5 stars heartbreaking, 11 Sep 2007

Well written biography by David Thomas detailing his life with an alcoholic mother who sexually abused him and later on in his life suffered further physical abuse by his step father.

Heartbreaking read, David's childlike memories of his horrific abuse by his mother are very hard to read about nevermind experience and the reader can only feel extremely sorry for David.

Highly recommended - the author should be proud of himself in finding the courage to write this book. I wish him continued success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Continuity of dates, 11 Jan 2008
By David Thomas "David Thomas" (Bradford, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As the author of this book, I want to thank J Kisseih for his very constructive comments about the dates. Because of the lack of continuity this made him question the validity of the other details. This personally saddened me a great deal. As the author of this book, I can assure him that everything went through a very stringent editing process where all details were carefully looked into. Several books in this genre have proven to have elaborate lies in them and so publishers have to be vigilant and rightly so. In fact, with my book, there were some incidents that I wanted to put in that the publisher rejected because we did not have enough documentary evidence. So I hope that any small editing errors did not deter from any pleasure he or any other reader derived from reading the book. I wrote this book to share my experiences, help myself and give some small inspiration to others. I hope you get that too.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Talented Memory, 8 Aug 2007
The early section of this short book is heart-rending when recollecting the abusive episodes of both of Thomas's parents and outside of the abuse, how they essentially let him down as parents. In the same vein as Duncan Fairhurst's Our Little Secret, it goes on to describe a slide into crime as one means of escape from both physical and sexual abuse. Perhaps because the level of criminality didn't extend beyond the minor, the latter half feels skirted over - there's no detail of any further treatment which David Thomas used to recover from his experience other than joining the Fire Brigade and the other newly found talents which led to his new career. That implies a potential follow-on book. This one is well written enough that I would welcome it, I was looking out for Tell Me Why's release and that's probably why I read it very quickly despite its 271 pages. I'll re-read it again a little more slowly...
