Book Description

6 April 1999

An original and lively new contemporary novel, set in south-east London, in the tradition of Martina Cole and Lynda La Plante.

A fast-moving, hair-raising novel, full of gutsy humour, about a notorious criminal gang and the women who run it…

The Sweeting family are well known in south-east London, and not for their honesty. Jock is a professional armed robber and proud of it, and Kelly, his daughter, takes after him. By the time she’s 20, she is running with the family gang, organising their heists with unprecedented success and audaciousness.

In contrast, her sister Jackie yearns for a life of respectability. To attain her dream she marries high-flying policeman Raymond, only to discover that his middle-class background has its own kind of hypocritical dishonesty. And Rosamund, Raymond’s unsuspecting sister, meets via the Sweetings the devious and irresistible Kevin Rice – but how long will she last as the wife of a criminal constantly on the run?

When the men in their lives lie, cheat and betray them, Kelly, Jackie and Ros decide that it will be for the last time. Their revenge is both outrageous and apt as they plan meticulously to bring off the biggest heist of the decade. And after the adventure of a lifetime is over, there will be no more secrets, and no more lies…

4.0 out of 5 stars Safe Indulgence in a Dangerous World 2 Dec 2002
Format:Paperback
I picked this book up with not a lot of thought about it and just thought I'd 'give it a go'. A book to pick up and put down when I had the time. How wrong I was! For the four days it took me to get through it, my real life was put on hold and I was addicted to my visits into the lives of strong women who love bad men. The heists, the heartache, the hilarity, this book throws a bit of everything into a safe and then blows it to bits with dynamite, and quite enjoys itself!
There is something that this book does, that makes your average moll think that the idea of draping yourself around a Vinnie Jones style gangster, is quite an acceptable and exhilirating ambition in life. I found myself in love with the bad guys and loathing the good guys. I wrestled with the femme fatales and lost every time, there is a part of every woman in all of those ladies and it's really good fun living the fantasy for a few hours a day. In summary, this is a real surprise of a book and the pictures it creates in your mind, grab onto your nerves with manicured hands one minute and strokes them with a furry paw the next!Purely addictive.

4.0 out of 5 stars tell me no secret 10 Nov 2012

The book was a bit backward and forwards, you had a bit of a difficult time getting into it.
Hard to concentrate, but about half way through you were alright.
If you persevere you will enjoy.
