Firstly let it be said that Jennifer Cruise is by far one of the best writers of Romantic Fiction around. She wins hands down over most other writers I have read of this gendre (including the excellent but somewhat overated Irish writer, Marion Keyes). That having been said, Jennifer Cruise's books all revisit the same themes and are, at first glance very similar. I think of it like painters who spend their whole lives painting the same tree, when you look closely you realise that there are infinate varieties and therefore possibilities within the same framework. So, what's Jennifer's 'tree' like? Well, they are all set in small town America, our heroine, the hometown girl, usually wants to 'break out' of the mold that she feels has been set for her, and she usually has a unbelievably sexy guy turn up to help her do it. There will be a best friend, a spunky kid, a strange looking dog and some kind of intrege that gets sorted out in the end. It will all be set to a soundtrack of classic pop/rock/country tracks. Oh and there will be plenty hot sex out of doors (Brit speak for outside). Believe me, Ms Cruise makes it much better than this sounds. Start with "Welcome to Temptation" and she will have you hooked - all her books are great (with the possible exception of Manhunting that is just good).
"Tell me lies" has all the essential elements, the characters aren't as well developed as "Temptation" but I think it's a funnier book. Its heroine is likable, but less attatching and couragous than Ms Cruise's other female characters. CL the hero, is great, as cool as his car, I would have just liked to have seen more of the drama from his point of view. I would have also loved to get to know the secondary characters a bit more. That said, I'll happily pay a visit again (and again and again) to small town USA, as long as its Ms Cruise who'll be showing me around.

This is the second book I`ve read by Crusie, and it didn`t disappoint. Although it follows a similar pattern to the other book I read, the way it`s written keeps you gripped, even though you have a good idea of what is going to happen next.
The book is set in a small town in the US where everyone knows everyone. The main character is the kind that half the town want to be and the other half hate (but secretly want to be). She is a teacher in the local school, married to prospective mayor, mother to an adorable daughter and lives her life trying her best not to upset anyone or to become the gossip of the town.
All this changes when she finds another womans underwear in her husbands car and a one night stand from her schooldays turns up - all in the same day! This sends her life into turmoil, leading to x number of life changing events and great sex scenes as only Cruise can write.
It may be slightly predictable, but this does not in anyway deter me from wanting to read all of Cruise`s book, and I plan to do so very soon

This isn't a typical romance novel - Crusie offers her superior writing to what could be a rather pedestrian story. Great dialog, wonderful characters throughout, good pacing, a decent mystery to boot. Yes it exaggerates the perils of living in a small town (US version, not quaint British village version), but as someone who grew up in a small US town, I can tell you it's not too far off. (OK, so the guys I went to school with didn't turn out as perfect as CL did!)And, the heroine isn't 23 with an almost perfect figure - she's over 35 with a few extra lbs. (not Jemima J poundage, but still - she's no super model.) Although I really like Crusie's other work, this one is my favorite.

I think Jennifer Crusie has a favourite theme where women leading ordinary lives suddenly decide to change them when all sorts of extraordinary things start to happen.
Although I love the dialogue and the jokes I think the plots of the books are a bit samey - but they are really funny so still worth a look.
Any women who think their lives are over by 38 should read this book.

Well, this was my third read of Ms Cruise's and I was not disappointed. Again there are the great sex scenes and the leading man you want to have for yourself (appologies to my husband for that) and the characters are all easy to identify. However, all four of her books I have now read (and the fifth I have just started) have very similar themes. They must be over thirty (mostly) they most love dogs, and one of them must have a child/niece who plays a large role. That said I will undoubtably buy whatever she writes next as her style and humour are compelling. Ms Cruise - a book for us under 25 cat lovers if you will???
