Book Description

April 2004
Thirteen years ago in Russia, Alexandra Jane Baker's father jumped out of a window after being accused of embezzlement. But Alex knows the truth - her father was murdered, and she will do anything to avenge his death. Now she is a world-renowned businesswoman, working on a very public oil deal in small Sokanan, New York. In private, she is pursuing her vendetta against Miki Petrov, the man she blames for her father's death. But the murder of Luka Kole, the man who spirited her away from both Russia and her father's enemies all those years ago, brings Detective Hank Bonner to her doorstep. Alex acts cold and controlled around Hank, but he knows there is more to her than meets the eye. As he gets closer and closer to Alex's secret, their shared personal sorrow turns to attraction and then love. Soon they are evading Russian strongmen, hatching plans with the CIA, and setting a life-threatening trap to ensnare Petrov with Alex as bait...

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish 14 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book, as I needed to discover a new author having read all of my favourite authors books. I had nothing else to read and this was the only reason I finished the book. The characters were completely unbelievable, it was totally predictable and tediously boring. I will not be trying any more of this authors books. I have now decided not to beleive all the good reviews as maybe the reviewers have not read anything better. AWFUL AWFUL BOOK!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good. Not great. 30 Oct 2004
By Helina Y. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I actually bought this book by accident, mistaking it for another with a same title. I don't regret buying it, as it was an enjoyable read. The story was fast paced, and kept me reading through all the way. The author is also very talented at actually creating the general atmosphere surrounding the whole story. You can feel the loneliness that Alex has had to live through, the desperation she felt after her protector/ friend is murdered. But to me, the best thing is that there is an actual sense of danger present: not just the 'I don't feel safe, so hold me' kind of fluff.

The thing that made me give this book 4 stars instead of 5 is the general lack of affection and passion between Hank and Alex. You can see it through the dialogue and what passes between them through the book, but it's pretty bland otherwise. No hot blooded romance here, just carefully phrased words, thoughts and actions that show they are attracted and care deeply about each other. In a way, it's a very sweet romance.

This book is good, enjoyable and easy to read but it's not great or a favourite for keeps or anything. Hope this helps some.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good one from Annie Solomon. 28 Mar 2004
By mahikahn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Hank Bonner is a cop in Sokanan, a small town in the Hudson Valley. He's two weeks from retiring so he can care for his niece, nephew and the family apple farm. His sister and her husband died in a tragic incident that Hank feels he should have been able to prevent.

Alex Baker is a wealthy businesswoman negotiating a joint Russian and American venture which will bring prosperity back to Sokanan.

When a man is murdered and Hank begins to investigate, the trail leads him to Alex. Alex has her own agenda which involves murder, betrayal, deceit and revenge and which puts everyone close to her in danger.

The only thing I didn't care for was Alex using her connections with grateful town officials to stop Hank from doing his job. I realize she was trying to keep him from getting hurt. However, by giving him insufficient information she ended up putting everyone is a dangerous position.

This was a good book with a fast moving plot and interesting, well-developed characters. I would definitely recommend it.

Annie Solomon has done it again! This is the best yet. She keeps you interested in the characters, rooting for them and helping us find a little bit of ourselves in each of them. What better place for a mystery than an orchard that is sweet with the scents of fresh fruit and hidden by the shadows of the trees. You will become an Annie Solomon fan with this, her newest book, Enjoy!
