Product Description

Product Description

Often rated as one of the most influential figures in contemporary British culture, Russell T Davies is now perhaps best known as the mastermind behind the smash-hit revival of Doctor Who and the creation of its spin off, Torchwood. In fact, his remarkable TV career stretches back over twenty years, taking in major dramas including Queer as Folk, Bob & Rose and The Second Coming.

This is the first book to trace Davies' entire life in television from his earliest days to his vast current success. Drawing on several years' research, this book reveals much fascinating detail about his life and work. This includes a wealth of information on everything from the writer's most celebrated works to abandoned Queer as Folk spin-off Misfits, forgotten fantasy soap Springhill and even his fleeting involvement
with Play School and Chucklevision.

Never before published material includes an extensive interview with Davies himself, as well as several of his most important collaborators including Nicola Shindler, Phil Collinson, Paul Cornell and Frank Cottrell Boyce.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended - T is also for Thorough!, 10 Dec 2008

This review is from: T is for Television: The Small Screen Adventures of Russell T Davies (Paperback)
For anybody interested in writing and television, one of this year's most talked-about books was "The Writer's Tale", an almost disconcertingly frank account of the writing experience by Russell T. Davies. Nobody who enjoyed that book should pass up the opportunity to read "T is for Television", an engaging and extremely thorough appraisal of Davies' professional work to date.

This isn't a biography as such. Rather, the authors prefer to tell the story of their subject's life through his work. Davies' childhood and formative years are covered of course, but the emphasis is always on his work, be it behind (and sometimes before) the television camera or in his most celebrated role as a gifted writer. Everything is covered, from the celebrated highs of "Queer As Folk" and "Doctor Who" to the unedifying ("Chucklevision") and the largely forgotten ("Springhill"), with the authors dismissing nothing and maintaining a perceptive focus throughout.

The breadth and quality of the research that has gone into this book is apparent on almost every page, and an impressive number of interviews with colleagues, mentors and friends (as well as with Davies himself) only adds to the impression of a comprehensive work. Analysis of Davies' work is thorough but impartial and refreshingly free of over-interpretation or didacticism.

All of this, combined with a fluent and accessible prose style, makes "T is for Television" an absorbing and enlightening look at the work of a much-discussed but often misrepresented talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars T is for Television - Ten Out of Ten, 10 Mar 2009

I found this biography on Russell T Davies an extremely enjoyable read. The fact that it was written with his permission and that he gave time to sit down for interviews I think adds greatly to the enjoyment. I have to admit the only series' I knew Russell for were: Queer as Folk, Cassanova and of course Doctor Who. Reading about his early carrer and how he got into the business in the first place I found of great interest. This is a book I would highly recommend to anyone. Enjoyable from start to finish. T may be for television, but for me it stands for ten out of ten.

An enjoyable and unfussy account of Russell T Davies' rise to prominence via his early memories as child of Doctor Who to .... his re-invention of Doctor Who. Full of interesting inside facts about the making of Dr Who, Casanova, Bob and Rose and his earlier works. Even my wife is reading it!
