The red telephone box is an iconic part of the British countryside, and its story is a fascinating one.

Telephone boxes appeared on the streets at the beginning of the twentieth century in all shapes, sizes and colours, but it was Sir George Gilbert Scott's classically inspired 1924 design that soon became part of the national landscape. Many rural communities had previously found it difficult to persuade the Post Office to install a telephone box, but its 'Jubilee Concession' of 1936, which applied to every town and village with a post office regardless of cost, saw it install over 8,000 new telephone boxes across the country -- and the red telephone box became part of the national pysche.

Neil Johannessen's concise history of this ubiqitious item of street furniture also acts as a 'spotter's guide' to the best-preserved examples.
