Product Description

Following the success of his two books on the castles and ancient monuments of England and Scotland, Damien Noonan has now crossed the Irish Sea to explore the many and varied historic (and prehistoric) sites which are to be found in Ireland. Since many of these are little known and often unsignposted, and since the arrangement for gaining access are frequently ad hoc and informal, a guide of this kind will be particularly welcome to natives and visitors alike. A chapter is devoted to each of the seven tourist regions of the Irish Republic (South-east, North-east, Shannon, West, North-west, Midlands & East and Dublin) with another covering Northern Ireland. This is an excellent book - as the blurb says, Ireland can be very frustrating to visit for those interested in ancient monuments, so this is a really useful guide. Plus it's chock full of - significantly - interesting snippets of history and information, entertainingly presented, without overwhelming you with the reams of dreary facts you so often get in official guides to places. Another great plus is that every single place in the book is photographed - beautifully, may I add - so you get a really good idea of what to expect when you get there. All this means the book is great to sling in the back of the car when you're going out for a drive round the country, and is also really nice to flick through and just admire the stunning pictures.

Beautiful photography, detailed descriptions and very readable text.

If you plan on going to Ireland or have already been, this is a rare look at some of the less accessible tourist sites. The book also gives a more in-depth look of the historical workings of a particular site than any tourist guide.
