4.0 out of 5 stars Good film, lousy dvd 26 May 2009
This film, released by Dutch fellow countrymen A-film, deserved a re-issue for a long time. As with a lot of Charles Bronson films, there obviously are no such things as good quality copies available. Let alone that some restoring would be done.
So what we get is a still great 70s Cold War movie with Bronson at his best and fortunately Lee Remick as his aide. Almost ruined by the abhorring quality of the source material. If you think your in for a visit to an optician, may I remind you it is just a blurred copy, A-film thought fit for use. Restoration would have made all the difference.

Most other movies which were inspired on the cold war were from the view of "our side" this one was inspired on the Russian KGB side.
I've seen this movie a lot of times on tv, and it is one of the best.
The story line is like that of a thriller, ordinary people who can be triggered with one sentence into dangerous terrorists and do what they were programmed to do. And that the list of these poeple fell in the wrong hands.
Well a good storyline is not all, it has to be worked out well also.
And they did that, the suspense is building up slowely, first finding the agents and stopping them and then finding the person who triggers them.
Ofcourse this goes with a lot of action, but not to much to forget the story, Most movies make that mistake nowadays.
Let's say it's an action movie with also a good storyline.
Charles Bronsen puts down an excellent Grigori Borzov.
And makes this movie a true timeless masterpiece.

3.0 out of 5 stars The woods are lovely, dark and deep... 14 Jun 2009
By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER
By the end of the 70s, world politics presented an increasing credibility problem to producers: how do you make a Cold War thriller in the age of détente? By having a good Russian trying to stop a bad Russian starting WW3 by activating several suicidal sleeper agents planted all over America during the Stalin era and long forgotten by the new management was the solution 1977's Telefon offered. Charles Bronson's the good Russian chasing fellow Great Escaper Donald Pleasance's bad Russian with the help of Lee Remick before the renegade Stalinist can write his name across the United States by triggering a series of pointless suicide bombings on out-of-date targets. A workable enough premise, but it's a film that never goes quite as far as it could. It's fun that a couple of the suicidal sleepers are a priest and an All-American pancake-making mom, but that's as far at stereotype subverting as it goes with the rest an anonymous bunch. The film's never quite as cold-blooded as it needs to be either: when he's unable to stop one reactivated sleeper, Bronson strangles him instead, yet it's a rather polite and bloodless scene that sheepishly cuts away. While it provides plenty of explosions it rarely kicks into full gear. There's one good chase in a San Francisco hotel familiar to anyone who's seen The Towering Inferno or High Anxiety that comes to a satisfyingly explosive end in an underground car park, but the film's climax seems more adequate than inspired. There's not even the remotest flicker of sexual chemistry between Bronson and Remick to carry the film between things blowing up. Read more ›

The film is excellent, but the quality of the DVD is absolutely abysmal. Hopefully someone will issue a remastered Blu-Ray.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great film, shame about the picture 3 Mar 2011

I would give this a definate 5 stars for the film, but this is basically just a poor transfer from a video. In fact I think my video copy has better quality picture, so if you are buying this in the hope of a perfect dvd quality picture maybe best to save your money and wait for a well deserved proper release, which the film certainly deserves.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unwatchable dvd. 8 Jan 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I have been seeking this item for some years. It arrived and looked good - until I tried to play it. I repeatedly stopped playing and eventually nearly an hour into the film it totally stopped and could not be restarted. In other words the item was unwatchable. I opted for a replacement but instead got a refund. My search recommences.
