Think long and hard before you buy this jam maker from Tefal - or indeed anything from Tefal.

We've had two now. The first one suffered from the very common problem affecting many of these things if you actually use it - the non-stick surface peels off and ends up in your jam or marmalade. That's quite a serious health issue - it's certainly not stuff you'd want to ingest. Tefal seem to be claiming that it's not a common problem. I suppose it isn't if you only use the jam maker once or twice, but use it more than that and the chances are you'll have the same problem.

So we managed to get a replacement - not from Tefal, but from the retailer. Now we find that the replacement has been recalled by Tefal for a safety modification.

Safety Notice: Tefal Jam maker MJ701 - I quote from it:

"The P4 programme will not complete its second cycle resulting in the paddle ceasing to rotate but the heating element remains on".

Does this sound like a similar problem to the one that cause the Tefal Actifry to feature on BBC Watchdog because it had a tendency to catch fire?

Tefal seem completely uninterested in providing any level of customer service, so don't expect any help from them when it fails or catches fire. Messages to their so-called customer service people just go unanswered, and you'll be very lucky to get a response from them.

I'm guessing this is the reason that Amazon have stopped selling them. They're badly made, unreliable and potentially dangerous. Think long and hard before you buy one. Do you really want to spend all that money on something which may only be safe to use for a few jars of jam?

I agree with what's already been said about this machine. It is a great jam maker and I seriously doubt if I would have made ANY jam if it hadn't been for the Tefal Vitafruit but the instructions are SHOCKINGLY BAD and the recipes end up being contradictory and confusing. Despite receiving three different manuals, none of them had a "getting started" guide which would have been useful. I'm not sure of the point of having the recipes duplicated (and some of them triplicated!!) in the various manuals. Come on Tefal - stop trying to be too clever and produce a decent unambiguous manual!!! Otherwise the actual jam maker is FABULOUS and I wouldn't be without it now.

The jam maker is a well-designed and made piece of equipment. it does what it says on the box - it makes jam (and jellies and chutneys). it is straight forward to operate and the results are excellent. There is still all the preparation of the fruit etc. to do of course but the actual cooking is taken care of. It cuts out the stirring and 'watching the pot' and if the timing is not sufficient to reach a set for some reason you can just set the machine to cook a little more until you are satisfied.
it is set to become an important addition to my kitchen wquipment, especially with Christmas on the way and all the Christmas preserves and chutneys to make.
When busy I just do the preparation and get on with something else while my trusty jam maker takes care of the rest.
One weakness is in the instructions. The multi- language format is familiar but you need to go from page to page to find a recipe and so it complicates finding the required information.
I would have liked to find a recipe section with them set out in 'classic' style for easy reference. I am putting them into my computer to print out for use but don't think this should be necessary.
however, this said, I have no regrets as to my purchase and expect many successful jam making sessions in the future.

I love making jam, but its a messy and rather haphazard business. I was a bit wary of this jam maker initially as it seemed rather expensive. I've used it three times already though, taking advantage of a glut of garden rhubarb etc, and its fab! It takes all the guess work out of the process, and when making jellies there is none of the messy sieving through muslin etc. Its also very easy to clean. I'd highly recommend this product despite the price- just make lots of jam!

I agree that the instructions are awful, but you soon get over that. I have made all sorts of jams and jellies and most of them have been sucessful. Those that werent were my fault...
What is really nice is that you can make jam without having to turn over the whole house and spend hours watching a bubbling pot.So I have made much more jam than I would have done. Its easy to tidy away also, and leaves virtually no mess. Though I cant expalain how last time I got strawberry jam in my hair !

    Verified Purchase
The jam maker is a very good product but is let down in a very big way because of the lack of proper instructions for use and recipes in PLAIN ENGLISH.

So, this is the second one we have had, luckily bought from lakeland( superb company) so they exchanged free...
The first boiled our marmalade. We thought it was the thermostat as it took ages to start the timer( starts when it gets to heat) now.. After only 3 batches of marmalade, it's doing it again. Set the timer... It boils for about 10 minutes before the timer starts. Two batches ruined - to hard - and a very upset missus( who is a professional chef)
Will again contact Lakeland as overall I can see this is a great product.
Has anyone else had this challenge?

Tefal take note... You are sitting on a market winner.. Read the posts and sort it out.. Then clean up the market

    All the best

    Brett
