Tefal Smart Technology
Tefal introduces Smart Technology, a steam generator technology designed to save time and remove the hassle from ironing while still providing the excellent results expected of a Tefal steam generator. With one-touch settings and clever technology, Tefal has ensured that the Smart Technology range will provide the optimal balance of steam and heat essential for achieving a crisp, crease-free finish across all ironable fabrics, from delicate silk to stubborn denim.
In ironing compromising between simplicity and ideal results can be a real hassle. Tefal knows that an optimal combination of temperature and steam is essential to obtain optimal ironing results. Tefal innovates with Pro Express Total Auto Control by creating simpler settings for the most demanding carers.
How Does It Work?
The Smart Technology microchip processor automatically regulates and maintains the soleplate temperature and steam output to achieve the optimal mix of the two. With less than one per cent variation, this precise feature takes the guess-work out of ironing, meaning no more risk of burning delicates or having the creases return to shirts through using the wrong setting--with Smart Technology you can achieve desired results every time.
Three Straightforward Settings
Smart Technology provides simplified settings, getting rid of the need for multiple dials and temperature controls. All Smart Technology settings can be achieved with the simple touch of a button: the steam generator does the hard work, meaning it’s easier and faster than ever to power through that pile of ironing. The Pro Express Total Auto control GV8930 contains 3 preset ironing levels: Normal, Delicate and Jeans. These provide you with the range of temperatures required to tackle all types of fabric while still being quick, easy and hassle-free to use.
High-Quality Features for Great Results
In addition to Smart Technology, nothing has been left to chance to ensure crease-free results when using the Pro Express Total Auto control. The steam generator from Tefal can cut your ironing time by half thanks to a high bar pressure created by heating water in an internal boiler, which allows the steam to penetrate into the fabric and remove even the most difficult creases. The higher the bar pressure, the more powerful the steam delivery will be and the better the results will be. With six bars of pressure and a 310 g/min steam boost, the Pro Express Total Auto Control has enough power to blast through even the most stubborn creases with ease. The 120 g/min continuous steam will gently soften clothes and allow for easier ironing.
Premium Ceramic Soleplate with a Superior Glide
Tefal offers premium soleplates, and the GV8930 Auto control is equipped with the Autoclean soleplate, which combines glideability with long-lasting performance. The Palladium Autoclean soleplate offers longer-lasting performance by destroying the fibres that can stick to the face of the iron and cause marks on your clothes, damaging the glideability of your iron. The system uses catalytic oxidation as the iron heats up to transform these fibres into gas and steam. This soleplate has also been specially made with a built-in anti-drip system and boasts extremely scratch-resistant and hard-wearing properties. The raised lines running across the soleplate ensure excellent heat distribution and reduce surface area resistance for enhanced glideability. Furthermore, the Pro Express vertical steam function is ideal for getting creases out of suits or other hanging garments and can also be used to de-crease curtains.
Ultra Long-Lasting Steam Performance
Tefal’s Anti-Calc collector provides the easiest way to deal with hard water and extend the life of your Pro Express Total Auto control. Simply remove the spoon and tap out the scale--no rinsing or descaling tablets required. How does the Anti-Calc system work? This patented system collects scale residue in a specially coated tray, which attracts the particles.
Safe and Easy to Carry and Store
With a steam hose and electric cord storage compartment the GV8930 is easy to pack away. This is combined with an iron safety lock, which securely attaches the iron to the base for simple transportation. Safety is a key priority for Tefal. The Pro Express Total Auto control provides stability with its extra-stable large open heel for safer storage and easier ironing. It also includes an auto-off function so there's no need to worry about whether the appliance has been turned off. If left unattended, the iron will turn itself off after 8 minutes when on its heel, and after 30 seconds when laid down on its side or with its soleplate facing down.
The 1.8 L water tank will enable you to complete long ironing sessions without having to refill the steam generator: 1.8 L equals more than 2 hours of ironing. Moreover, the continuous fill allows you to fill up the water tank without having to turn the steam generator off and wait for it to cool down before refilling.

The physical unit:
All steam generators are bulky and a lot heavier than standard steam irons and this one is no exception. The bulk and weight can upset the balance of an ironing board so you do need to be a little more cautious especially if you move the board around. On that note, you will need an ironing board that is compatible with steam generator irons (they tend to have large wide plates where the base sits). The base unit has silicone pads for the iron to rest on and when unattended there is a plastic arm that lifts over and locks the iron firmly in place. The iron handle then acts as the handle to lift the whole unit. Of all the steam generator irons I have tried, this one is the most stable when sat on its heel on a padded ironing board.
Filling and de-scaling:
This is so simple, no measuring jugs or funnels required, just pull out the water tank and fill it up under a running tap. The tank will take a whopping 1.8 lts of tap water and can be refilled at any time without turning off the iron.Read more ›
To be honest, I have never scrimped on irons but had never had a steam generator before. However, after grumbling publicly about how much I hate ironing, I decided to take the plunge when a friend on Facebook recommended I get one. I whizzed through my basket which included baby clothes, older children's clothes, a few dresses and skirts, hubby's shirts and several pairs of jeans. Not one item was a disappointment. In fact, after I finished I even went in search of more ironing much to the amusement of my family!!
This iron is powerful, very intuitive, quiet and very, very effective. I'll point out now that I did a LOT of research before deciding upon this particular iron. Initially I intended buying Bosch but the poor views put me off. I like Philips too as I fancied a one temp for all but again some reviews put me off - I had a lovely Philips iron in the past and although it looked sleek it didn't last long before cracking and leaking even though it was used only occasionally (did I mention I used to hate ironing!) Finally, what really swung it for me was the fact my current iron is also a Tefal and that, plus the many positive reviews for this model made me order it. Although comparatively expensive, I am so pleased I spent more than I'd intended because today's workload was a revelation.
To say I enjoyed ironing today would be an understatement - I was blissful as I worked away. :) Happy ironing is guaranteed and before you ask, no, I haven't been paid for this review! :D
This is my first steam generator and they're not cheap, so I did my research and I'm happy with my choice.
I thought it might be a bit much to spend for someone who only really irons for one, but the time makes it worth it.
You will find it really easy to iron many things at once (ironing is quicker and you won't need to keep refilling it), which saves time in the long run.
Here are some practical but not necessarily technical things that are important in my opinion:
- Low is good for silk or things you're afraid of burning and works nicely. Medium/Normal is fine for most things, like shirts, some sweaters, trousers. High is good for jeans, linen and some cotton.
- Steam comes out only while the trigger is pressed (very easy to do, part of a normal grip). One review for another iron complained about this, but I would complain if it was always on, because that's highly wasteful, since about a quarter of ironing time ising spent with the iron sat on the ironing board as you move the item of clothing.
- I've really never needed the extra pressure, but it's definitely there if you do, maybe for awkward creases.
- The tank is easy to remove and fill and is short enough to be filled from a bathroom sink (unlike some irons).
- There is room to tuck both cable away into the iron, separately.
- The iron locks into the unit securely (no need to wait for it to cool) and that's how you move it (iron handle). It's quite heavy, especially if the tank is full. But I can still move it with one hand.Read more ›
