Enjoyed by more than five million households world-wide, the Tefal ActiFry has been cooking deliciously healthy meals in British households since 2007. In a nutshell, the ActiFry is a revolutionary product which allows you to enjoy tasty, traditional, home-cooked chips, but at the same time stay healthy and feel good about what you are eating. Its patented technology ensures you can cook a variety of delicious meals with excellent all over cooking results.

The healthier way to fry: Fluffy crispy chips with just 3% fat*

Want to enjoy fluffy crispy chips and not feel guilty about it? Simply cut up fresh potatoes, and using just one spoonful of oil, you can make one kilogram of golden, crispy home-made chips, which is enough to feed a family of four. The ActiFry allows you to cook crispy and fluffy chips and enjoy them with your family, guilt-free. That one spoonful contains 100 times less oil than a traditional deep fat fryer, which not only means that your food is substantially healthier, but cooking is also more economical and safe for the whole family. For frozen foods, you can even cook your meals without adding any additional oil.

A free recipe booklet is also included, to give you that initial bit of inspiration you need when creating the delicious, healthy meal. Why not try the turkey breast with three peppers recipe or a traditional chilli con carne, and if you really want to impress, cook up a casserole or curry – all in the Tefal ActiFry. There are endless possibilities, so set your imagination free and make the most of the dishes you prepare.

Also, there's no need to shake or stir during cooking, so you can enjoy hands-free cooking, not to mention more free time as well, as you don't have to constantly tend to your cooking. The ActiFry is temperature controlled for the best crispy chips every time, and since it requires no pre-heating, it's ready to go when you are. In order to ensure you enjoy a pleasant cooking experience, the ActiFry is also equipped with an odourless filter and since a fresh spoonful of oil is used each time you cook, you won't have that fatty chip shop smell lingering and your kitchen and cleaning-up is a breeze.

An audible "ready" alarm at the end of the cooking period will let you know when your food is cooked, so you can just sit back and relax while you wait. On the Family version of the ActiFry, which serves up to 6 portions, the cooking process will automatically stop when the timer reaches zero.

The lid can also be opened during cooking at a push of a button, in case you want to add some ingredients or seasoning to your recipe. When the lid is opened, the ActiFry will pause the cooking until you close the lid again – at which point it will resume cooking from the time it paused.

About Tefal

Tefal owes its origins to Frenchman Marc Grégoire, an engineer and keen fisherman. Monsieur Grégoire wanted the reel on his rod to run more smoothly, and experimented in the 1950s to see if a non-stick coating would work. It did, but it was his wife Collette who made the real breakthrough, suggesting the coating would be more useful in making cookware easier to use and clean. Now, Tefal is the number one name in non-stick products and small appliances, operating in more than 120 countries. Tefal remains committed to making household tasks easier and cooking results better, through a constant flow of new ideas, technology and innovation. Examples of that cutting-edge innovation can be seen in the ActiFry, Tefal Steam Generators and the Jamie Oliver cookware range boasting Tefal's Thermo Spot, which ensures your pans are always at the ideal temperature to start cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Should there be a small gap between the cover and the body of the Actifry?

A: Yes - this is normal. The lid and body should not be air tight so that moisture can escape and avoid any pressure building up within the appliance.

Q: Does the Actifry automatically turn off when the cooking time is up?

A: Only on the Family Actifry and the Actifry 2-in-1, the other models beep to alert you but carry on cooking until they are manually turned off. Please also note that electrical items should not be left unattended.

Q:The lid gets hot during use – is this normal?

A:Yes – this is perfectly normal.

Q: How can I avoid the lid cracking and breaking?

A: Always clip the lid into place firmly but gently. When closing the lid, do not bang the lid shut but use the finger tab on the front of the lid to gently press the lid into place. If putting the lid in the dishwasher, always place it near the top of the dishwasher (the cooler area) and use a cooler setting - refer to your dishwasher manual.

Q: My Actifry will not switch on, there is no light and no power - why?

A: 1. Try putting the plug into a different mains socket - as there may be a fault with your mains socket. 2. Try changing the fuse in the plug. 3. If there is still no power, call the Tefal Helpline: 0345 602 1454.

Q: What temperature does the Actifry cook at?

A: The cooking temperature of the Actifry is approximately 180°C (160°C at the heart of the food) at the end of the cooking.

Q: How much oil is recommended for use in the Actifry?

A: For the standard capacity 1kg Actifry and 1.2kg Actifry Plus, there is a spoon provided with a volume of 14ml. The 1.5kg food capacity Actifrys are supplied with a spoon measuring 20 ml. The majority of recipes will use one spoonful of oil, however this may change according to the recipe. Some foods do not need one full spoonful of oil to be cooked in the Actifry: frozen chips will already have oil on the exterior and fatty foods such as sausages may not need a full spoonful of oil as there may be a lot of fat already in the foods.

Q: What types of oil can I use in my Actifry?

A: The Actifry can be used with a variety of oils such as Olive Oil, Vegetable Oil, Sunflower Oil.

Q: How much oil do I need to add for frozen chips?

A: None as the chips already contain oil.

Q: Can I purchase the recipe book?

A: These are not available to purchase but you can download the recipes.

Q: What are the best potatoes to use in the Actifry?

A: Maris Piper or Red Rooster generally give the best results. However, results can vary for all potatoes used depending on the season and also how they are stored in supermarkets. If you do not achieve good results then try changing where you purchase them from.

Q: What is the best way of cooking chips and to avoid soggy chips?

A: Ensure that the chips are all cut to a similar size. Wash the cut chips twice in a bowl of water before cooking to remove any excess starch. It is then essential to dry them thoroughly before cooking in a clean, absorbent tea towel and finally patted dry with kitchen paper. Any moisture will give soggy chips. Also, see above for the best potatoes to use.

Q: Do I have to use the paddle during cooking?

A: Yes in the 1kg and 1.2kg Actifrys to prevent food falling into the motor unit.

Q: What do I do if my product fails?

A: Visit the Tefal website and complete the Contact Us form or call the Tefal Customer Relations Helpline: 0345 602 1454.

I got the ActiFry recently primarily because I've been doing Slimming World.

'Slimming World' chips are chips sprayed in Frylight and cooked in the oven. To be honest, they're acceptable, but they're not the same - the aren't really crunchy on the outside and they're not very fluffy on the inside. I got a bit bored of chips like that, so I decided to get one of these.

Putting it together was as simple as could be - I managed to get everything open and apart without a second thought, gave it a wipe down and away we went.

On the first night I cooked a batch of chips, some bacon and some sausages. I chipped the potatoes, rinsed them and patted them dry, sprayed them with Frylight (avoiding using even the tablespoon of oil because that would be more fat than just doing them in the oven) and set the machine off.

30 minutes later (there weren't that many of them - the book states 45 minutes for 1Kg), I had a batch of hot chips. They were much more crispy, better on the inside too. I was really impressed with the results because to be honest I wasn't holding out much hope that it would be any different to cooking them in the oven.

Straight after they came out, I tried some sausages and bacon in there. I put both in at the same time (6 low-fat sausages, 6 medallions of bacon) and added no oil. I was a little worried about whether it would cook the sausages through, whether the sausages would be too heavy for the agitator, and whether the bacon would burn being put in at the same time, but 12 minutes later both of them were beautifully cooked through.

Cleanup was relatively simple, though a few little pieces of chip managed to get through to the base of the machine and had to be wiped out.

Just had my actifry delivered this morning and cooked chips for lunch. Nicely browned and crisp on the outside , soft and fluffy on the inside. Much better than I expected and I'm looking forward to trying out some of the recipes from the actifry app I just downloaded onto my phone.

It's clear from the wording and pictures on the box, and from the first-mention in the instruction book, that CHIPS are one of the target food staples for this product. Well, there is no doubt in my mind that you should only cook (frozen) chips in the Actifry if you have no other choice, because the result is not as good as the same type of chip cooked in a normal fitted oven. Some of the crispness is lost and they taste rather rubbery. The initial appeal of cooking frozen chips in a dry environment turned to disappointment and in summary I would say that chips and the Actifry don't make the best partners.

It's a slightly better story with potatoes though. A little oil is needed, and there's no point in applying more than the recommended amount. The general feedback from around the dining table was "Hmm - they're okay" and comments like that. Just 'acceptable', that's all, but definitely better than McCain frozen chips.

I also cooked some chicken nuggets and southern-fried chicken steaks - with conflicting results. Both of these types of food are battered and a lot of the batter (or breadcrumbs) gets scraped off by the rotating arm so in terms of presentation it's a thumbs down. Even children will look a bit sceptical when the plate is put in front of them because the nuggets look as if they've gone 15 rounds with Mike Tyson - 'battered' takes on a new meaning here. On the positive side however, the taste was fine and much, much better than the frozen-type chips. I have tried Quorn sausages (for vegetarians) and I couldn't really fault it - a very good result.

Because the food in the Actifry is liable to cosmetic damage by the rotating arm, making potato chips (i.e.

The actifry is brilliant but last year our original one fell to bits, lid broke, paddle broke, handle fell off.

So despite the cost we decided to buy an new one. Just over a year old and the paddle has now broken, rung customer services and got cut off, rung again, cut off again. Eventually got through only to be informed I am out of guarantee and will have to buy replacement parts. That's what I call customer service! What a shame a good product is let down by poor parts and lousy customer services.

Reading some of the product reviews I am not alone in my experience and perhaps Tefal should consider giving a two year guarantee to their customers, or perhaps I have misjudged the company and they want their product to fall apart so they can get their profit margins up!

Shame on you Tefal, you could do much better.

Perhaps I have learnt my lesson and will try one of the other, cheaper hot air fryers that are available as I have already had two actifrys that cost a lot of money and barely lasted longer than a year, I'm not sure I will make a third mistake!
