The healthier way to fry: Fluffy crispy chips with just 3% fat*

Want to enjoy fluffy crispy chips and not feel guilty about it? Simply cut up fresh potatoes, and using just one spoonful of oil, you can make one kilogram of golden, crispy home-made chips, which is enough to feed a family of four. The ActiFry allows you to cook crispy and fluffy chips and enjoy them with your family, guilt-free. That one spoonful contains 100 times less oil than a traditional deep fat fryer, which not only means that your food is substantially healthier, but cooking is also more economical and safe for the whole family. For frozen foods, you can even cook your meals without adding any additional oil.

Also, there's no need to shake or stir during cooking, so you can enjoy hands-free cooking, not to mention more free time as well, as you don't have to constantly tend to your cooking. The ActiFry is temperature controlled for the best crispy chips every time, and since it requires no pre-heating, it's ready to go when you are. In order to ensure you enjoy a pleasant cooking experience, the ActiFry is also equipped with an odourless filter and since a fresh spoonful of oil is used each time you cook, you won't have that fatty chip shop smell lingering and your kitchen and cleaning-up is a breeze.

ActiFry is simple and hassle-free to use. All you need to do is place your food in the bowl, add a spoonful of your chosen oil, close the lid, set the timer and let it cook away. Whilst cooking, the ActiFry will maintain a constant cooking temperature, at approximately 170°C to ensure excellent and even cooking results. For peace of mind, the steam-free lid and viewing window also allows you to keep an eye on how your cooking is progressing.

Once you've finished cooking your meal, the lid, bowl and paddle can all be removed and are all dishwasher-safe. The rest of the ActiFry can be easily wiped clean with a wet cloth or soft sponge - that's everything you need to wash up taken care of.

The ActiFry also features a timer, which can be set for up to 99 minutes. Simply switch the ActiFry on, place the ingredients in the non-stick bowl, close the lid and set the timer. An audible "ready" alarm at the end of the cooking period will let you know when your food is cooked, so you can just sit back and relax while you wait. On the Family version of the ActiFry, which serves up to 6 portions, the cooking process will automatically stop when the timer reaches zero.

Pause function’

The lid can also be opened during cooking at a push of a button, in case you want to add some ingredients or seasoning to your recipe. When the lid is opened, the ActiFry will pause the cooking until you close the lid again – at which point it will resume cooking from the time it paused.

Non-stick removable pan

Tefal ActiFry boasts a removable ceramic coated pan which ensures it is easy to clean. And if you have a dishwasher, feel free to place the pan, paddle and lid all into the dishwasher for easy, hassle-free cleaning.

Free recipe booklet

Each ActiFry comes complete with its own recipe booklet containing a variety of mouth-watering meal suggestions for the whole family, including Chicken Tikka Masala, a vegetable stir fry and even Mediterranean style calamari recipes.

About Tefal

Tefal owes its origins to Frenchman Marc Grégoire, an engineer and keen fisherman. Monsieur Grégoire wanted the reel on his rod to run more smoothly, and experimented in the 1950s to see if a non-stick coating would work. It did, but it was his wife Collette who made the real breakthrough, suggesting the coating would be more useful in making cookware easier to use and clean. Now, Tefal is the number one name in non-stick products and small appliances, operating in more than 120 countries. Tefal remains committed to making household tasks easier and cooking results better, through a constant flow of new ideas, technology and innovation. Examples of that cutting-edge innovation can be seen in the ActiFry, Tefal Steam Generators and the Jamie Oliver cookware range boasting Tefal's Thermo Spot, which ensures your pans are always at the ideal temperature to start cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Should there be a small gap between the cover and the body of the Actifry?

A: Yes - this is normal. The lid and body should not be air tight so that moisture can escape and avoid any pressure building up within the appliance.

Q: Does the Actifry automatically turn off when the cooking time is up?

A: Only on the Family Actifry and the Actifry 2-in-1, the other models beep to alert you but carry on cooking until they are manually turned off. Please also note that electrical items should not be left unattended.

Q:The lid gets hot during use – is this normal?

A:Yes – this is perfectly normal.

Q: How can I avoid the lid cracking and breaking?

A: Always clip the lid into place firmly but gently. When closing the lid, do not bang the lid shut but use the finger tab on the front of the lid to gently press the lid into place. If putting the lid in the dishwasher, always place it near the top of the dishwasher (the cooler area) and use a cooler setting - refer to your dishwasher manual.

Q: My Actifry will not switch on, there is no light and no power - why?

A: 1. Try putting the plug into a different mains socket - as there may be a fault with your mains socket. 2. Try changing the fuse in the plug. 3. If there is still no power, call the Tefal Helpine: 0345 602 1454.

Q: What temperature does the Actifry cook at?

A: The cooking temperature of the Actifry is approximately 180°C (160°C at the heart of the food) at the end of the cooking.

Q: How much oil is recommended for use in the Actifry?

A: For the standard capacity 1kg Actifry and 1.2kg Actifry Plus, there is a spoon provided with a volume of 14ml. The 1.5kg food capacity Actifrys are supplied with a spoon measuring 20 ml. The majority of recipes will use one spoonful of oil, however this may change according to the recipe. Some foods do not need one full spoonful of oil to be cooked in the Actifry: frozen chips will already have oil on the exterior and fatty foods such as sausages may not need a full spoonful of oil as there may be a lot of fat already in the foods.

Q: What types of oil can I use in my Actifry?

A: The Actifry can be used with a variety of oils such as Olive Oil, Vegetable Oil, Sunflower Oil.

Q: How much oil do I need to add for frozen chips?

A: None as the chips already contain oil.

Q: Can I purchase the recipe book?

A: These are not available to purchase but you can download the recipes.

Q: What are the best potatoes to use in the Actifry?

A: Maris Piper or Red Rooster generally give the best results. However, results can vary for all potatoes used depending on the season and also how they are stored in supermarkets. If you do not achieve good results then try changing where you purchase them from.

Q: What is the best way of cooking chips and to avoid soggy chips?

A: Ensure that the chips are all cut to a similar size. Wash the cut chips twice in a bowl of water before cooking to remove any excess starch. It is then essential to dry them thoroughly before cooking in a clean, absorbent tea towel and finally patted dry with kitchen paper. Any moisture will give soggy chips. Also, see above for the best potatoes to use.

Q: Do I have to use the paddle during cooking?

A: Yes in the 1kg and 1.2kg Actifrys to prevent food falling into the motor unit.

Q: What do I do if my product fails?

A: Visit the Tefal website and complete the Contact Us form or call the Tefal Customer Relations Helpline: 0345 602 1454.

I have been lucky enough to have been using the Tefal Actifry for a week now and have got to say that I am thoroughly impressed with this clever kitchen gadget. I have seen it advertised since it's launch and have wondered whether it is a great a machine as testers and salesmen have claimed.

I am happy to say that I have not been disappointed. This is a versatile kitchen cooker which most people would use again and again. It is great for a wide variety of foods and even though most reviews talk about how well it cooks potatoes, producing chips and roasts using only a tablespoon of oil, it can also be used to make many other meals, including curries, stir fries, risottos, and desserts, the only things that aren't recommended for cooking in it are dishes which use alot of liquid and freshly battered food. You will have to experiment with it when cooking your own recipes, the machine does come with a very limited recipe booklet with 12 recipes and a cooking time chart at the back which covers times for potatoes, meat/poultry (fresh and frozen), frozen ready meals such as paella or stir-fries, fish/shellfish, vegetables and fruit desserts eg bananas, strawberries, apples and pineapples. I am disappointed in the free booklet, and have looked to see what is available to buy, however there is a gap in the market, apart from a couple of books by Paul Brodel, there seems to be no other cookery books. I have spent sometime looking online where a lot of owners post their own recipes. Saying this you could use Tefal's recipe book and pick their curry recipe and use the cook times but alter it to other casserole type meals e.g. sweet and sour chicken. The rotating blade which sits inside the pan ensures that whatever you are making is evenly cooked and browned.

I've had an Acti-Fry before but it was an older model and I only had it for a little while.

I bought the family model as it has two major benefits over the other models, apart from the size that is.

The first benefit is that it has an automatic cut off once the timer has reached zero which the other models do not, so if you forget your chips your ok, it will turn itself off, the chips keep warm in the residual heat of the machine for a good while.

The second benefit is a little more obscure, the family version has a plastic ring that fits around the top of the pan, this overhangs the pan itself and for things like a stir-fry it keeps all the contents inside the bowl, I found on the other models it tended to want to escape :-)

I use my Actifry mainly for chips, roast potatoes, chicken wings and stir-fry food. It is excellent at all of them.

You can do other things like chicken nuggets but some more moist foods will shed their breadcrumbs due to being moved all the time before the coatings have hardened in the heat, that is the price you pay for low fat cooking I am afraid.

I have also owned a Philips Air Fryer and while it was ok, it wasn't great at making chips like the Actifry and also oil built up on the internal parts and made it smoke a lot, there is no smoke with the Actifry.

I would advise against dishwashing the parts of this machine, hand wash them, it only takes a minute.

I've had this machine for several weeks now and it is slowly growing on me.
Like most people I started off with the chip butty test and it works great, using only a drizzle of oil the chips come out perfect. I hated using the old chip pan but this has taken most of that aggravation away, don't throw the chip pan away though as this machine isn't much use for fritters or any battered foodstuffs like onion rings as the rotating arm takes most of the batter off.
I've been cooking sausages and chips together and the fat from the sausages helps cook the chips, it's a matter of trial and error as to when to put each item in.
The leaflets included do contain a few recipes but it's not an impressive collection by any means, it's a shame there so few recipes included. I tried the risotto recipe but it was a disaster other attempts have been more successful, stir fries come out great.
It's very easy to take apart and clean.
The cost may appear prohibitive but as it uses so little oil it's a far healthier option than deep fat fryers.
It will never replace my trusty old Ken Hom wok which has faithfully served for well over a decade but it is a great addition to the kitchen.

I first got one of these a few years ago and was quite pleased with the way it cooked chips. Though it made a lot of noise and took ages.

It cooked other food less well, such as a chilli we made. In fact the food was cold when finally completed and had no less fat than the way we would normally have cooked it.

After a few months, small parts started to break. The paddle no longer clipped into place, the handle broke, then the clear lid, then the mechanism that caused the paddle to rotate. SO we got a new one (thanks to Amazon's excellent customer service).

The new one has lasted longer. But a year later it has died in the same way.

The problem is the quality of the plastics being used. The material that connects the paddle to the center spindle is made of a type of plastic that actually seems to melt after a period of use! Now the cursed thing doesn't rotate properly so the food doesn't get cooked properly!

Tefal really need to look at these issues and address them. Now I have a large, expensive, noisy and useless cooker sat on my worktop.

    A complete waste of money!
