In this collection of assays, the authors present original research and scholarly review of published literature addressing the social aspects of teenage parenthood. Through this they challenge media and policy representation of teenage pregnancy as hazardous to teenagers, their children and to society. The book presents an alternative account to the dominant stereotype of teenage pregnancy in public discourse and policy which presents pregnancy as being the result of ignorance about contraception, low expectations, dependency on welfare, and as being symptomatic of a broken society. The stereotype has perhaps become too engrained and difficult to dismiss altogether, but the reader is presented with an alternative narrative and real life storeys coupled with compelling analysis in a more compassionate framework. The authors emphasise that the question of teenage pregnancy does not always fit the negative stereotype presented by the media and policy documents, and the book presents sufficient evidence to support this thesis. The reader will be left with a more balance view of teenage parents who often see themselves as `just a mother or father' like any other. As such the book is highly recommended for anyone involved with teenage pregnancy including social and health care and policy makers.
