Product Description

There wasn't much to cheer about for Manchester City fans during the mid-1980s. With the club's coffers empty following a disastrous series of signings at the start of the decade, City seemed in decline as attendances dwindled and interest waned.
The only relief from the gloom came in the form of a talented crop of youngsters that arrived at the club from 1983 onwards. Fourteen teenagers who would go on to acomplish something supporters had waited 33 years to achieve.
Producing one's own players has always been an emblem of pride for football supporters. Established in 1953, the FA Youth Cup has always been the litmus test of a club's youth policy. Until 1986 Manchester City had reached the final twice but actually winning the trophy had proved to be a step too far.
Teenage Kicks is the story of how 'The Class of 1986' won the prestigious trophy for the first time in the club's history and using both exclusive and archive interviews, it describes how the team came together and details what became of each of the fourteen teenagers from that point onwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant memories 20 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Teenage Kicks is a poignant reminder of how the football factory discovers, uses and discards talent. The Manchester City youth team that won the FA Youth Cup in 1986 was packed and this book traces what happened to the lads as they became men. A few went on to star in City's first team, others were dropped by the club and picked up by local lower league clubs and the rest dropped out of the game entirely due to injury or lack of talent and application.
The authors skilfully reunite the players as the men recall the shared experience of being handpicked by a top professional club and put through their paces. It is perhaps a sobering reminder that there is life after football and for the vast majority there has to be...

5.0 out of 5 stars Teenage Kicks 6 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Though this era was undoubtedly one of the less celebrated of Manchester City's era, Teenage Kicks tells the story of how their Youth team won the prestigious trophy for the first time in the club's history. Its an excellent account too, with exclusive and archive interviews. I remember the fourteen teenagers from that team, and the book is interesting in showing what happened after the glory of that Cup win.

Great overview of that charts the course of youth cup winning team of 86 which loving,y pieces the background of my formative years as a city fan.... Reminds me of the club and the trials and tribulations I used to endure as a fan which is a very different animal to the team I support today
