Product Description

Product Description

On visits to Scotland, 28 years after leaving Glasgow, Teddy Taylor is still greeted with cries of "I know who you are!" Despite being away for so long, he always seems to be recognised. Modest and self-effacing, he is remembered fondly by many across Scotland who could not support his politics, but admired and respected his commitment to his constituents, a philosophy he continued in Rochford and Southend until his retirement. Here is the man who climbed out of a graveyard with Enoch Powell, who asked Norman Tebbit not to tell people that he was a Conservative, who initiated contact with Libya during its period of isolation, who resigned from Ted Heath's government over the Treaty of Rome, and who, along with seven other M.Ps, was expelled from the Conservative Party for a period of time by John Major. This gentle autobiography of a schoolboy who fell into politics, then served forty one years of his working life as an M.P. in Scotland and England, will surprise and fascinate those who respect integrity and hard work. It must also intrigue young people who are thinking of following a political career.

3.0 out of 5 stars AMIABLE ACCOUNT, 31 Aug 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Teddy Boy Blue (Paperback)
This is an easy read which will be of interest particularly to those interested in Scottish Conservatism.

The best parts are at the beginning particularly Teddys account of the circumstances which led him into politics initially and his early election battles.

Afterwards it gets a bit bogged down.

There is very little about his personal life or family.

Teddy seems to get on with everybody which in itself sounds virtuous but perhaps suggests a lack of iron in his soul to fight his corner.

5.0 out of 5 stars A political biography with a difference., 17 April 2009
This review is from: Teddy Boy Blue (Paperback)
Teddy Taylor was an MP for 40 years. He briefly held junior ministerial office under Edward Heath and, but for his failure to be re-elected in 1979, would have probably been appointed Secretary of State for Scotland by Mrs. Thatcher. The following year he was returned to the House of Commons as the result of a by-election, but the career of this now exiled Glaswegian was to advance no further than the Conservative backbenches for the next quarter of a century until his retirement in 2005. The less informed would therefore be forgiven for assuming that this is the story of an unsuccessful politician.
Yet Teddy Boy Blue is anything but the autobiography of a failed man. Without bitterness or cynicism, this is an unusual insight into British politics from Wilson to Blair by one who was never afraid to defy the prevailing consensus of so-called informed opinion on such questions as the restoration of capital punishment, devolution for Scotland and, not least, European integration.
Respected even by political opponents for his selflessness and assiduous commitment to those he represented, few MPs in years to come will equal the courage and integrity of this lifelong teetotaler, loyal and dedicated husband, and devout Christian.
