As it has been a few years since my first book (The Art of Making Teddy Bears)about getting started in bear making came out, I found out that a lot of people were ready for that next big step;- how to design one's own bear patterns. This is really where the thrill of bear making begins (and you thought you were having fun up until now making commercial kits and patterns!). Once you start designing your own bears, they evolve, and you just want on keep on going where they lead you. Also, once you are making bears of your own design you can start to sell them and, if you have that special spark, maybe even think about giving up that day job! Taking that first step in designing your own patterns can be a difficult one, and I have tried to make it as straight forward and simple as possible. I learned the hard and painful way, by trial and error, as there was no-one to teach me when I started (10 years ago in Australia). I wanted to take the frustration out of it for you, and to show you the joy of creating something all by yourself. As a bonus, I have included three new bear patterns (more challenging than the ones in my first book, which aimed to show everyone how easy and wonderful bear making is), as well as all the tips and pointers I can think of to make your life as a budding bear artist easier.
