Product Description

A powerful glory and tears story of an East End boxing idol who went from national hero to fallen star. It features many previously unseen photos. The name Teddy Baldock is enshrined in the record books as Britain's youngest ever world champion, a pugilist of great historical importance. Born at Poplar on May 20th, 1908, boxing was in his blood, his grandfather having been a bare-knuckle fighter. Baldock's brilliant boxing skills and colourful style saw him fight in famous venues like Madison Square Gardens and on the same card as the likes of James J. Braddock (the Cinderella Man ). At 19, the Pride of Poplar defeated American Archie Bell at the Royal Albert Hall for the World bantamweight title, in one of the greatest bouts between boxing's little men. He would never reach such heights again, but when he retired after a distinguished career of over 80 fights he remained a hero of the East End, long after his heyday in the ring. Teddy s story is the stuff of legend; in his prime, his wealth and fame was such that he rubbed shoulders with dukes and earls, and the Prince of Wales even requested to shake his hand. But in 1971, when he died penniless in an Essex infirmary, he didn't even have his own pyjamas. The man who had thrilled packed boxing arenas with his noble art was completely forgotten . . . until now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Fighter Real Fights, 24 Feb 2010

This review is from: Teddy Baldock: The Pride of Poplar: 1 (Hardcover)
Brilliant book about one of our lesser known world champs. These guys seemed to fight once a week for about ten years. He won a fortune, lost a fortune and ended up pretty much down and out, but he sure lived a life. You really get a sense of the era he lived it and the poverty around the East End.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real tribute to a real British ring legend., 15 Jan 2009
This review is from: Teddy Baldock: The Pride of Poplar: 1 (Hardcover)
In an age where many British boxers reach millionaire and so called legend status long before they actually achieve anything in the square ring this book is a breath of fresh air.

Teddy Baldock, achieved more in his reletively short career than many other boxers ever did and at last this forgotten warrior's story has been put in to print.

Much like Baldock's career the book has no holds barred, taking the reader on a journey of the highs and lows of Teddy's life in and out of the ring.

If you are looking for a sugary tale of life try one the biographies written by 19 year old 'superstars' (chapter 1 My paper round) If you want a well written gritty look at a true working class hero who had everything and ended up with nothing then this is for you, whether you are an avid boxing fan or not. It is a truely fantastic read.
