Product Description

Review

“…A rare imaginative feat and the taste that it leaves is haunting.”
The Observer

--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

Ted Hughes, one of England's foremost poets, and Poet Laureate since 1984, is also a haunting reader of his own work. On this recording he reads his own choice of more than fifty poems from the first twenty years of a literary career that began with the publication of 'Hawk in the Rain' in 1957. In particular, the programme includes a generous selection from two of his most powerful and distinctive works: 'Wodwo' (1967) and 'Crow' (1970).

Format: Hardcover
I must admit to being new to the work of Ted Hughs but having read some of his "Collected Poems" a magesterial compendium I felt the need of some author editing and thought that this CD would add to my appreciation. And I was not disappointed, Hughes readings are memorable and I was especially moved by his wildlife poems such as The Thought Fox, The Jaguar, Pike etc. A great buy for me and I think it will be ejoyed by all who purchase it.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful By RR Waller TOP 500 REVIEWER on 27 Sept. 2011
Format: Hardcover
Ted Hughes (1930-1998) is "a brooding presence in the landscape of 20th Century poetry" and any serious student of his work must have this CD, a collection of his readings recorded over many years and, although it is obviously only a small selection of his work, to have him reading it adds the magical dimension, like being present as Beethoven conducted the "Eroica".

The strong Yorkshire tone of Hughes reading his own work gives added enjoyment to the poems. Many from this volume read aloud by different accents at the Poetry Group, but the author was by far the best.
