Ted Heath was first and foremost a jazz man but he was one of the first to recognise the then new rock'n'roll music and one of the first to clock up a number of hit singles which are all on this CD.He was also the first to make singles specifically for America and the first to put a drum solo on the charts. His band singers included Lita Rosa,Dickie Valentine and Dennis Lotis
The first hit was Vanessa in 1955 followed by a string of cover versions some of which went level pegging with the originals eg Skin Deep (Duke Ellington with Louis Bellson),Dragnet (the Ray Anthony Ork)and Tom Hark (Elias & his Zig Zag Jive Flutes)though his cover of The Creep lost out to the Ken Mackintosh original
Biggest hit was Swingin' Shepherd Blues which beat the original by the Moe Koffman Quartet hands down as it rose to the top 3 with a final one Theme from Top Secret in 1961.The Faithful Hussar was a German folk song said to have been written in the 1800s but had been used in a film. The Heath version was a hit single in America along with Vera Lynn's vocal version-his debut in America was on a part exchange with Stan Kenton who had bizzarley decided to make a cover version of The Creep though Ken Mackintosh outsold him in the States

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with this album, it's just that the content concentrates more on the Big Band Pop output of TH in the 50's, rather than the shouting big band numbers he was capable of. Some big band afficianados may well revel in hearing the likes of Dennis Lotis,Dickie Valentine and Lita Rosa doing their stuff. Nothing wrong with them of course, it's just that I prefer Mr Heath's instrumental output, for instance, a great version of "Heading North" represented here. The old "Dragnet" theme also crops up, giving me fond memories of the deadpan cop (Jack Webb) in the TV series from the 50's. On second thoughts, don't take any notice of me - at the price I paid for it from Amazon, you simply cannot go wrong. You'd pay more in a charity shop. An exercise in nostalgia from the best Brit. big band of the 50's.

Good album containing hits as ordered. Much easier when we have a track listing to go by should all have 1
