5.0 out of 5 stars Must read 23 Feb 2013

A must read for any EFL teacher wanting to build his/her understanding of the alternative methods of teaching.

The book is made up of a number of chapters addressing approaches to teaching which date from the very first Grammar Translation to the more current Participatory Approach, and everything in between. The writing is very accessible, giving an introduction to the academic school behind each approach, an example lesson and a list of guiding principles for each.

In today's world of principled eclecticism in teaching, it's nice to have a ground-level introduction to some of the less commonly used approaches. I've used CLL and Participatory elements in my lessons to good effect as a result of reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great guide for an ELT 10 May 2012

When you come to the University to study something related to Language Teaching, you need the proper tools in order to achieve your goals. This is when this book comes in.
I'm in my fourth year of English Teaching, in Chile, and I saw this book in a lessons that we have, which is called Methodology. In this lesson, our teacher brought the same book that I just bought and star to deliver the content and creates some debate about the different ways of teaching English. All was based, mostly on this book. If this is going to be a necessary element for me, as a future teacher, I wanted to have it. It brings all the background information for every possible way of teach a Second Language; Strategies, Methodologies, some guidance in term of activities. A must have if you want to improve your teacher's knowledge. Farewells to you all, thanks Amazon.co.uk for the service. See you in a month-and-half!
