By Tom Cat TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Though the original product was designed in the early 1970's, it's successor, the SL1200 MK2, is now legendary among clubs and DJ's alike. It has since the early 1980's been at the heart of many a person's night out. And like most, the only off-putting thing about this deck is its price. But surely you'll be wanting to know why its considered 'the best'.

It's simple really - If this product were a football boot, it would be the tough, reliable and test Puma King or Adidas Copa Mundial, which feature everything you need and nothing that you don't all in a tough package.

The Technics 1200's are not fancy decks. For instance, the two sets of lights - one being a pop up one, and one housed in the on/off switch - are both used for targeting the speed of the vinyl and where your needle is. The targeting idea is simple but ingenious - the dots on the side of the platter will 'appear' to move slowly in a line if the pitch is away from 0%, so you know how fast or slow the vinyl is spinning. And then when the pitch is on the green light (0%) the dots just stand there, meaning its playing perfectly at 33/45 rpm. Perfection!

But of course, its main boasting point is its motor. It is true that other decks have Direct Drive motors like this.. however.. this deck has such a precise torque rate (the lag time between movement and resistance) that I don't believe it has been matched. This is because of a unique Quartz motor that's been used, with uses an encased magnetic field (standard motor) rather than the cheaper Direct Drive motors found on other decks. This means the 1200's are quiet and never rumble, and so precise that you can cue a track and don't even need to rock the vinyl to get it going at the right speed, because the motor is so powerful.

The platter is just a platter; no fancy details. No ridges etc like on many Numark ones, which really don't feel as flat - this is perfectly shaped. The start/stop button is nice and big, easy to just tap quickly when changing a vinyl. Another great feature is the simple pitch again - its stiff (at first, anyway) and again.. flat! Many modern ones have fancier designs with curved shapes etc which can be less accurate. This however, IS accurate, and feels it.

What is their to say that hasn't been said? Using these decks feels special, for you know some of the greatest DJ's out their used them. They're tougher than the Nazi Panzer Tank, and should be top of your list if you're wanting to take DJ-ing seriously. However, if you're just at home and want to mess around, you will definitely find other decks out their which will suit your needs for a 'much' cheaper price - my recommendation being the Numark TT 200.
The best has yet to be battered!
