This is truly excellent book. Suitable for the beginner and the experienced trader. It has been described as the bible, i would not disagree at the very least it is the "first" book that any aspiring trader should read.
Written in a very easy to digest fashion with a very sensible progression, the reader can not only learn techniques, but get a basic outline of all major TA techniques, from which one may decide on a more detailed course of reading that would have otherwise not been possible.
It is a must buy with the "Study Guide" as this gives one the chance to test your command of the subject matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have not finished it but had to review it NOW 17 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
10 out of 10
I have not finished reading it, I am only 60% of the way through, but I had to write a review NOW to help you decide.
Chances are, the price overwhelms you, and you are looking at many other TA books trying to find an equivalent cheaper one. There aren't any.
This book is worth ever dollar. Many other books make TA seem so complicated, difficult. Furthermore, it gives a much deeper understanding of what it explains, many other books simply tell you something but you don't learn why, how, what to do if there is a variance, etc etc you get the idea.
It is a huge book and very well presented. The graphs are well located to the text, easy to understand, each with its own detailed annotations directly underneath as well as references in the text.
It is recently updated, and might I say ~thoroughly~ updated, it has a section on Japanese Candlesticks which makes obsolete a previous book I bought (by the same author, looks like he pasted most of it in this book). Look at the contents, it covers most everything, including Elliot Wave theory. They have done an excellent job at updating it.
There are other TA "Bible" books out there, classic masterpieces, which are very good, however the recent updates made to this one, combined with its easy to read, learn and wonderful presentation make this the winner.
If you get one book on TA, get this one. It is worth the money. You will save money in three ways:
1. if you get another book instead, you won't have to purchase this one later when you realise how lacking the other one is (or worse, buy several trying to fill knowledge gaps)
2. you will make better trades
3. you will save time, learning faster
I really cannot emphasise how well the concepts are explained.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential viewing 20 Oct 2003
Format:Hardcover
Anyone involved in the markets, on any time scale, will verify the fundamental need for Technical Analysis in making trading/investment decisions.
Many publications diversify into (very) esoteric theories about T.A., which may or may not be profitable, according to the individuals application.
I have found this book to be clear and concise, explaining the underlying concepts of T.A. in a way that anyone approaching the markets, cash in hand, needs to read to be "grounded" and enabling the reader to further study any given method of choice.
The term "Bible" has been used for this book, I would say for myself, that along with Nison's "Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques" and Bulkowski's "Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns" this book is a constant reference source which needs re-reading and keeping on the desk.

5.0 out of 5 stars The TA/Charting Bible 7 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This is, without doubt, the TA Bible. Essential reading for anyone starting out and also an indispensable reference guide for know-it-alls like me. Big book, but broken down into very readable chapters. Buy other books, but make sure you buy this one first.

As an accountant and an economist I can not ignore this book. Anyone wishes to engage in trading shares or commodities, I suggest reading this book. It is a good introduction to a beginner, or to those, who wishes to engage in trading equities. Fundamental analysis is simply not enough to succeed, you must know about technical analysis as well! It's simple to read, BUT it is a must to practise, as TA is an art, as well a science! An econometrician will question some aspects of the book (i.e. random walk), but this does not mean that the techniques explained in the book are not applicable in the real world. I gave 4 stars out of 5, as Murphy did not include much of research Journals (to make academics happy as well) in his book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Technical Analysis 14 Jan 2003
Format:Hardcover
I have played with Technical Analysis, used various forms of software but never really had much success. This book was suggested by a friend. I bought both the book and study guide from Amazon and found it to be excellent. It covers all important techniques and is easy to understand ( particularly for a beginner like me). It gives good advice and is, in my opinion, good value. The study guide is less vital but does enable you to monitor and review your progress (without the temptation to cheat!!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 15 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I started studying Technical Analysis about a year ago. John's book was the seventh book I read. I wish it had been the very first. It would have helped tremendously. Highly recommended. Oh, and get it with the Study Guide. Better yet: buy two books - one for daily use and the other to keep!
