1.0 out of 5 stars Unsuitable for Wet Weather 18 Aug 2010
By Brennan - Published on Amazon.com

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS WATCH IF YOU MAY EXPOSE IT TO RAIN OR WATER. I am generally a passive purchaser, but I am compelled to write this review based on the terrible performance of this watch. The watch is rated for water resistance up to 10 meters. To quote the Amazon description, "The Tech 4O Traileader Jet may look like a watch, but it works like the ultimate survival tool, packing everything you need to navigate the wildest of wild places into a compact, rugged stainless-steel case." Implicit in this description as well as the water resistance rating, is the ability to wear it in wet places. My watch flooded when it got wet (my arm dipped into the water less than one foot) on a recent trip to a lake. It is no longer operational (after a total life of 2 months). When I discussed this with the company, they indicated that it should never be placed in the shower or submerged at all in water. Because it was submerged (albeit less than one foot), the warranty is void. This was new to me, as I interpret "Water Resistant to 10M" to mean that the item should not flood at 6 inches, and if it does, it would be covered by the warranty. Otherwise, it should state "Water Resistant to 6 inches." Additionally, I interpret "navigate the wildest of places" to include wet environments given that water covers over 70% of the planet. I have had a number of outdoor watches (Timex, Polar, Rolex, etc...). None of these has broken when exposed to shower water or slightly submerged in standing water. I would never recommend this watch to an outdoor enthusiast, as it is next to impossible to avoid incidental submersion if this watch is used for its intended purpose. Moreover, do not expect any reasonable customer support in this event. You are much better off paying a little more for a Suunto or a lot less for a Timex Iron Man that will operate in a wet environment. These guys just got it wrong in making this watch.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Water Resistant 19 July 2010
By Jake & Julie, VA USA - Published on Amazon.com

I bought the Tech4o Traileader Jet watch from Amazon after quite a bit of research and liked all of the functions. Once calibrated, it worked great. I also liked the overall look of the watch, although it is a little on the large size (standard for a watch with this many functions).

The specs all said the watch was water resistant to 10-meters. While this was lower than most of the other sports brands (typically water resistant to 50-200m) I figured I've never been 30-feet deep before in my life, so it would suffice. HOWEVER, on day three I went to a kiddie splash park with the kids. After about 20-minutes of playing in the water I noticed that the face had moisture inside obscuring the view. If you're not familiar with a splash park, think of a large concrete area with sprinklers and waterfalls. This was not swimming, snorkeling or diving. Essentially it was like getting caught in a heavy rainstorm.

I called the Tech4o customer service line hoping that this was a fluke since I like the watch and could not find another brand anywhere near this price. I was given the seemingly well rehearsed line that the watches are "water resistant, not waterproof". When I pointed out that ALL watches say water resistant rather than waterproof and that is why companies list a max depth, I was simply told if the watch is in constant contact with water moisture will get get in. However, if you drop it in a pool (less than 10m deep), and retrieve it "quickly", the company says it will be fine.

Since I'm in the military, I cannot have a watch that cannot get wet. It's going back.

Bottom line: It's a nice watch with great features - but keep it dry, and don't get caught in the rain.

Note: You may want to read the warranty info before purchasing (it's only a page or two). It essentially states that the company doesn't cover anything - particularly moisture.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dont buy it 28 Feb 2011
By Art S - Published on Amazon.com
I hike and trail run few times a week. I bought this watch for keeping track of the distance I run and the elevation gain. right away on my first trail run in hot California weather i noticed that the screen got fogged up after I started sweating. This gradually got worst with every run and every fast hike where i would sweat. until I could hardly read the screen anymore.

If I used it around town or did any activity that didn't involve sweating it worked fine, but this isn't why I bought the watch. It is advertised as an "ultimate survival tool" you can see that for yourself on the tech4o website.

After few months of usage the watch eventually died, the screen is dark. I never submerged it under water. didn't use it unless I was hiking and trail running. I think this product is flawed. A watch that can't deal with a little moisture, or even rain can't be an ultimate survival tool. I am going to contact the manufacture and see if I can get my money back.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Word......Badass. 10 April 2010

Right out of the box I was slightly disappointed to see the face is made of plastic rather than mineral glass, but thats where the disappointment ends. The watch is very "stealth", which is a huge plus for me. Both the LCD and the body/band are %100 black. Slick as hell. The display can be customized 4 or 5 different ways to suit your needs. Temp, day, date, time, weather, barometer are just a some of the options you have for the display. Most of the options will also display a second readout as well. So you can still see the time and keep other info on the screen.

A few notes:

The temp readings have been within 2 or 3 degrees of my homes thermostat. +1 for accuracy.

The altimeter out of the box was off by 100 ft. Not bad, but you can manually adjust for proper altitude. Since adjusting it has been accurate to within 25 ft. +1 accuracy.

The compass is a no brainer. Perfectly accurate right out of the box. Another +1.

You can adjust the display to show two different time zones at once.

My favorite feature so far is the time/distance display. It shows your distance traveled/time/pace all on one screen. You can cycle through pace displays independently as well. You can choose MPH, Minutes per Mile, or stride (steps the accelerometer is counting). I have been running with the Nike+ system for a few months now and calibrated it to a 400 meter run around the track. Assuming the Nike+ was calibrated %100 accurate, the Traileader Jet was once again good to go right out of the box. It showed 3.018 miles while the Nike+ showed 3.00. Basically dead on.

I think the price is extremely reasonable for the features offered. Quite a few other watches offer the Altimeter Barometer and Compass but at a MUCH higher price. And very few, if any, offer the accelerometer as well as the ABC features. The best of both worlds right here with the badass Tech4o!

1.0 out of 5 stars Fogged Up and Stopped Working 16 Sep 2010
By Samuel D. Piper - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this watch and it generally seemed to work at first. It is a lot better at counting steps than distance but the distance function was useful. Nonetheless, a month after buying the watch it would periodically fog up making it difficult at times to read the display. Four months after receiving the watch it stopped functioning altogether. I was not able to have the watch replaced because four months was too long. If you buy this watch and it fogs up I recommend replacing immediately before it is too late. I would not recommend buying this watch at all.
