Product Description

Product Description

On Tuesday, January 12th 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake shook the island nation of Haiti. The United States Agency for International Development estimated the death toll to be somewhere between 46,000 and 85,000 people, with 220,000 injured and over 1.5 million homeless. Many organizations, both from the U.S. and abroad, responded to the appeal for humanitarian aid.

Dr. Stephen Schroering and Chris Rakunas went to Haiti to deliver over 21,000 pounds of medical and surgical supplies to the New Life Children’s Home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and several other hospitals. In Tears for the Mountain, Chris recounts his mission to deliver these supplies to the earthquake-ravaged island nation. Chris discusses both the triumphs and heartbreaks of the trip, the problems with distributing aid in a nation lacking the most basic infrastructure, and his unexpected encounter with a notorious Haitian warlord.

A portion of the proceeds for this book will be donated to the New Life Children’s Home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential read 2 July 2012
By Beeshon
Format:Kindle Edition
This is an account of Chris Rakunas' experiences when he and a colleague spent the best part of a week in Haiti to deliver a consignment of medical supplies to aid the country after it was devastated by a catastrophic earthquake in 2010. The medical supplies were for hospitals and an orphanage run by someone known as the Mother Theresa of Haiti--Miriam, an extraordinary, selfless, and utterly dedicated lady.

This is a compelling read. It's a stomach-churning read. It's a tragic read and one that makes you ask a number of questions--many of which, amongst others, Chris asks at the end of the book--but primarily, you ask yourself why, how, can such a dreadful, ravaging natural disaster happen?

Approximately three million people were affected by this quake, over 300,000 people died, 300,000 were injured and over a million made homeless. The devastation and destruction is unimaginable, but Chris ably conveys the horror, the tragedy, the gut-wrenching despair of injured children who have lost their parents, injured parents who have lost their children, husbands who have lost their wives, wives who have lost their parents, families who have lost their homes, their businesses, their income. Then there's the sheer frustration of not being able to freely go about doing what aid workers are there to do: the ominous military presence is frightening to say the least and Chris becomes hell-bent in his determination to achieve what he set out to; there's frustration at not being able to take the simplest of measures that will save lives; there's frustration at the insensitive and callous attitude of film crew who metaphorically trample on people's destitution for the sake of sensationalism.

There is no doubt that his experiences changed Chris.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, a must read. 16 Jan 2012

I have bought over 100 nonfiction books on Amazon, but this is the first time I feel compelled to write a review. The author's writing style is clear and authentic and the message is inspiring. The book is accessible to young and mature adults and provides a great account of a very important international incident.

4.0 out of 5 stars A moving tale of a deep experience 17 Jan 2012
By Joe Pilam - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a strong debut by a new author, with a vivid depiction of the desperate situation in Haiti after the earthquake and the plight of the people as they struggle to recover. You feel the author's astonishment at the scope of the devastation and his pain at the suffering of the victims. But while there is sorrow for the pain, there is a real sense of admiration for the heart and humanity of the Haitians, and hope for the future. This book explores the essential conflict of the human experience, by powerfully showing both the depth of human suffering, and the promise of a better life. If you believe that we all are responsible for our fellows, then read this account of one man's journey into a disaster zone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read a book. Save a child. 14 Jan 2012
By Jose F Morillo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I had the honor of reading a copy of this book prior to print. This was a special read for me as I was able to observe as Chris went through this special part of his life. For those interested in doing mission work: this is your book. For those interested in a first hand point of view of the terrible events occurring in Haiti post-earthquake: this is your book. For those interested in humanity: this is your book. Knowing that the money spent on this book will in part go toward helping children in great need makes the purchase of this book a must. Chris: you did a wonderful job with this book!
