Willis's uneasy conscience leads him to defy orders and expand his mission, and in an ambitious follow up to Training Day, director Antoine Fuqua escalates tension and strike-force with considerable emotional impact. Bruce Willis is one of those actors from whom you expect great things without there being any particular logic behind the inclination, after all, he makes some decidedly average films. I had heard that Tears of the Sun was a less than excellent exposition of the action man's talents and so I started to watch this film ready fortified for the expected ensuing disappointment.
As it turned out, I shouldn't have bothered, because as the film progressed, I became increasingly optimistic. Quite apart from the fact that the story was well crafted, I was completely unprepared for the stunning cinematrography, the beautiful cut-away shots of jungle flora and fauna and the excellent soundtrack. In many ways, this is a movie that didn't require Bruce Willis, and perhaps it's the big name lead that caused all the fuss and disappointment, since it's no star vehicle, but even so, Willis doesn't in any way disappoint. The tale is gripping and tense, there's plenty of action and the subject matter is compelling if at times, upsetting.
So, I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, although I'm still not sure if my overall impression would be much changed by having greater hopes for it before it began, I guess a second viewing is in order to make sure, but I cannot in any way see how anyone would find this movie dull or hateful.

This is a truly underrated and poorly advertised masterpiece. Exposing the true horrors of war, exposes a unfamiliar side of Bruce Willis, a caring loving side.
Although at times deeply disturbing and horrific, some of the scenes are incredibly moving.
The balance obtained in this film is superb, between action drama and tagedy..

Treat this movie as an example of a Bruce Willis "action vehicle" and you'll enjoy the experience. In truth there is a bit more character development and story than in many action movies, but it's appeal will be mainly for the many well done action set pieces.
Picture and sound quality are superb on Blu Ray and are well ahead of the standard definition DVD. If you like this movie and have a Blu Ray player then this is definitely one disc you should upgrade to.

I went to see this movie expecting Bruce Willis to be his usual "John MacClean [Die Hard]) self. Instead I was riveted to my seat by the intense reality of this excellent movie. The story contains such realism that it is shocking in parts, but at the same time it opens your eyes to the very real brutality that goes on in the war torn states in places like Africa. It was also an excellent portrayal of the US military covert ops. I don't think a real Navy SEAL would find much to criticise about this film. WATCH IT / BUY IT !!!!

Tears of the Sun, is a very good film. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training day, Shooter), this is powerful, stylishly filmed and well acted action drama. Director Fuqua seems to make action movies with a little more heart and soul, and intelligence than your average shoot 'em up (apart from Replacement Killers, which was just a gun porn John Woo produced bullett fest).
Here it is about the drama as Lieutenant A.K. Waters (Willis) leads his Navy seals into a rescue Mission Dr. Kendricks (The ever reliable Monica Bellucci), a U.S citizen, from war torn Africa, as the goverment fails and the rebel army start to tear the country apart.
Bellucci is great as the very caring Dr, never seeming unrealistic in her compassion who instantly clashes with Willis, also on fine form playing one of those world weary, gruff cynics, that he's so famous for, though clearly this time with the story being what it is humour is not involved, this is a straight Willis performance (no Diehard oneliners).
What ensuses is a cat and mouse element as Willis and his team have a moral crisis, and decide to disabay orders, and escort the refugees who the good Dr is tending to out of the path of the rebels.
Whilst this cannot perhaps follow the punch of say Black Hawk down (as that was strongly based on real events), it does follow a familiar story arc, in that the heroes are thrown into a mission that spirals out of their control at quite a fast pace, and leaves them running for there lives.... Best film i've seen in a long time. Didn't think it was going to be all that but thought I'd watch it anyway and was completely blown away. Watched it with my 14 year old son, even he said it was amazing. Good, fast delivery from supplier too. Excellent purchase, very impressed.

I thought this film was filmed amazingly, had a serious and good plot and was generally a fantastic and powerful film. It doesn't have the usual Hollywood crap (well, maybe at the end), and i think it is just generally better made than most other war films out there at the moment.

I THINK " TEARS OF THE SUN " HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST UNDERATED WAR FILMS OF ITS TIME, THIS HAS A GOOD STORYLINE, GREAT AND CONSTANT WAR ACTION HIGHLIGHTING THE HORRORS OF WAR IN AFRICA, WITH ACCOMPANYING HAUNTING MUSIC SCORE THROUGHOUT, ALL IN ALL,A MEMERABLE FILM WITH BRUCE WILLIS AT HIS BEST

Great Action Movie
This is Bruce at his best. Tough Navy Seals go and help a doctor and her injured refugees escape from a army sent to kill them. Lots of action well worth watching.
