4.0 out of 5 stars Aged 55, and starting to learn the violin 13 May 2011
To have a go at learning the violin has always been an ambition of mine. I did learn some piano as an adult, and just scraped through Grade 4, with the lowest mark. This was 14 years ago. So, I have bought a violin, because if I don't do it now, I won't. I had my first lesson last week. I am humble enough to appreciate that this is an instrument that will take a long time to get used to. Over the past week, I have been almost frightened to pick the damn-thing up, because I I think I will break it. However, having having taken a deep breath and trying to take everything that my tutor talked about, this is indeed an excellent introduction. Although obviously focussed for the use of children, I am a virtual "child" when it comes to learning this instrument, so accept this approach.

I am only on the first section, but this is just what I need. I have not been able to accompany any of the recorded tracks yet, as I have only had one lesson, but found that I am able to appreciate its contents, and know that this is an excellent book that will help me to progress further, if I just put in the effort. The only criticism at the moment, is the "tuning" track on Track 1. It just sounds like a computer "hum". I don't know why it doesn't have a violin playing each string, which would make it that much easier, (I think, in my naivety). There are no explanations either, as to which string is being played. But then, I am a complete beginner, and no doubt I will sort the tuning stuff out in due course.

My BIG criticism, is the most bizarre CD listing of tracks that I have come across. There are 96 tracks of accompanying music, but they are not sequential at all. The CD track listing goes from, for example, from 17, to 59, to 18.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners 15 May 2013

Recommended by my tutor this book is easy to follow, once I had got over the shock of having to learn to read music. The fiddle is an instrument to play with people so at an early stage it gets a bit frustrating if you keep on trying to work through the book alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beginner violin 17 Jun 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I keep coming back to this book, ideal for both class and individual lessons at all ages. It has very good progression and plenty of short tunes right from the start. Excellent for building memory, reading of notes, introduction of topics with musical examples. It will take the student to grade 1 easily (scales at the back). My only criticism is that the CD edition does not have the track numbers printed with the pieces (they are in an index at the beginning, inserted into the original printed edition) which I think is a bit cheapskate, bearing in mind the huge market for this book. So you or the student will have to mark in the track numbers as you go along (wasting time in lessons!)
