3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant and enjoyable., 17 May 2008
By J. D. Naylor "jazzfan" (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
British muscians Justin Quinn(guitar),Neil Craig(table) and Jonathon Mayer(sitar) have teamed up to produce an enjoyable album of Indo/jazz fusion.Mayer is the son of John Mayer who led the whole Indo/jazz revolution along with Joe Harriott in the mid 1960's so the pedigree is there for all to see.
Between them they have composed an album of nice tunes played in the traditional Indian Way but with the acoustic guitar giving things a different sound and feel to what you'd otherwise expect from Indian music. My only misgiving about an album like this is that from a jazz fans point of view it's a little light weight. If they were to add a flautist to the trio i think that would make a huge differnce to the depth of sound, harmonic possibilities and the music's ability to really hold your attention. If you like the Zakir Hussein,Jan Garbarek,John McLaughlin album "making music" then you'll like this.Otherwise you may find it a little too unobtrusive and light weight although enjoyble nevertheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex, rewarding stuff, 20 Aug 2008
By Jacqueline S (London, UK) - See all my reviews
A welcome departure from the well-trodden path of Indo-jazz experimentation. Not quite jazz, not quite Indian classical music, these guys have taken the sitar/tabla/guitar combo and made it their own. Mayer's Emily stands out as a sumptuous and elegantly drawn ballad. And for rhythmic complexity with near Balkan intensity, Craig's opener, Deliver Me, is a smasher. A highly accomplished debut.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 16 May 2009
This acoustic trio burns. The compositions are exemplary and the playing even better. Particular high points for me are Mayer's awesome solos on "Deliver Me" and "Emily" and Quinn's solos on "Outnumbered by One" and "Slow Down". Mayer is one of only a few musicians whose playing can reduce me to tears. One of Quinn's fortes seems to be his ability to hold the band together - without anyone noticing. His subtle and supportive accompaniment is always on the money. And together with Craig he provides the perfect platform for Mayer to weave his magic. Hope to hear more from this remakable gem.
