Review

If only I'd had this book when I started my teaching career, I would have been more confident and happy as a teacher --Julie Blevins (Drama and English teacher, secondary school)

Product Description

In the fast-paced, pressurised, often chaotic life of a school, there are times when even the best tried-and-tested ideas don't seem to work with some classes and some students. Even the most experienced teacher will have times when they feel de-skilled and incompetent. 'Teaching the Unteachable' is aimed at helping teachers deal with these situations and feelings. It explores factors behind those 'bad days' and looks at what can be done when nothing seems to work. Marie Delaney provides a summary of effective behaviour management strategies, drawn from her extensive experience of success (and failure) in working with pupils of all ages, and staff. She then offers an easily accessible framework for understanding the behaviour of those children for whom basic strategies don't always work. The author provides a further set of principles and good practice, showing how to use this enhanced understanding to reach those students who are just more difficult to teach. The result is a complete toolkit of skills that supports all teachers every day in the classroom.

A great resource 17 April 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is great, providing practical advice with solid theoretical underpinning in an easy to read format.

I found it very accessible - the author writes from her own experiences in school and her honesty about the struggles and challenges she faced prevent the tone from being 'preachy, judgmental or condescending of those seeking support in managing challenging behaviours.

Whilst I heartily recommend reading it from cover to cover - this book appears to have been designed for those with little time to spare in mind: Each chapter is broken down with sub-headings into succinct, easily digestible sections; the font is large facilitating skim reading; and each
chapter ends with an 'in summary' box bullet-pointing the key learning points from the chapter.

I thoroughly recommend it for anyone working in a school setting, whether primary or secondary - a must-have for the staff-room coffee table! (Although I am not a teacher myself this also comes with the endorsement of my mother-in-law who is involved in training NQT's and has over thirty years of teaching experience - when I gave it to her to read she reckoned it was 'spot-on!')
